🌟 September 7th is World Duchenne Awareness Day! 🌟

Did you know…?
👉 Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a life-limiting genetic disorder predominantly affecting boys. The condition gradually leads to muscle weakness and impacts mobility, breathing and heart function.

👉 Underlying the symptoms is the loss-of-function of dystrophin, a structural protein expressed mainly in muscle cells.

👉 Dystrophin is also expressed in neurons within specific brain regions.This connection is relevant as a subset of boys with DMD exhibit cognitive dysfunction.

👩‍🔬👨‍🔬 Earlier this summer the FDA approved the first gene therapy for treating 4-5 year olds with DMD. More work needs to be done, but advances in research and therapy are paving the way for a brighter future, bringing hope to those living with DMD.

👉 SMA is a genetic neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord.

👉 About 1 in every 50 individuals is a carrier for the defective gene associated with SMA.

👉 Individuals with SMA produce low levels of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Without it, motor neurons deteriorate and don’t function properly.

👉 This leads to muscle weakness, affecting daily activities. SMA doesn’t diminish the abilities to learn or form relationships.

👉 Newborn screening, early diagnosis and disease modifying treatments are providing hope, enabling those touched by SMA to embrace life to its fullest.

MS can occur at any age, but a diagnosis is usually made between the ages of 20 and 40.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a rare neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder that affects the sympathetic and sensory nervous system.

In this article, the authors employ the human pluripotent stem cell system to understand disease mechanisms and test candidate drugs.

Are you looking for an easy option for developing a powerful in vitro model for nerve damage and axonal regeneration?

The OMEGA’s unique open chamber design gives you direct access to your neuronal cultures and performing axotomy experiments is as straightforward as this:

👉 Remove the pre-assembled, pre-wetted device from the packaging.
👉 Coat the device, seed your neuronal culture and incubate.
👉 Use a pipette tip to simply scrape along the microchannel wall thereby disrupting axons that have grown across the microchannels.
👉 If mechanical axotomy is not suitable for your planned experiment, detergents (e.g. saponin) can be washed on/off quickly to achieve a similar result chemically.
