ALL SOULS’ DAY • NOVEMBER 2

The commemoration of all the faithful departed (commonly known as All Souls’ Day) on the day following All Saints’ Day began as a monastic custom at the great Abbey of Cluny. Under the influence of Abbot Odilo, who in 998 observed its observance in all Cluniac houses, the custom gradually spread until in the 13th century it was universal throughout the Western Church. The medieval rite contained the famous sequence Dies Irae. The observance of All Souls Day was carried forward in the Church of England after the Reformation and found in the Book of Common Prayer on page 301.

In a society which has largely abandoned traditional patters of mourning, the liturgy of All Souls’ Day acknowledges the hard and painful reality of death in the “sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life.” On All Souls’ Day, as we remember those of our brethren who have gone before us, we are reminded that the believer’s pilgrimage of faith is lived out with the mutual support of all the people of God. In Christ all the faithful, both living and departed, are bound together in a communion of prayer.

ALL SAINTS DAY • NOVEMBER 1

During the liturgical year the Church celebrates one by one the feasts of the saints. On All Saints Day (and during the Octave) she joins them all in one festival. In addition to those whose names she knows, she recalls in a magnificent vision all the others "of all nations and tribes standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, proclaiming Him who redeemed them in His Blood."

The Feast of All Saints should inspire us with tremendous hope. Among the saints in heaven are some whom we have known. All lived on earth lives like our own. They were baptized, marked with the sign of faith, they were faithful to Christ's teaching and they have gone before us to the heavenly home whence they call on us to follow them. The Gospel of the Beatitudes, read on All Saints Day, while it shows their happiness, shows, too, the road that they followed; there is no other that will lead us whither they have gone.

From its earliest days, the Church has recognized as its foundation stones those heroes of the faith whose lives and witness have called others to holiness and have assumed a communion with the Church on earth and the Church in heaven. Celebrating the Feast of All Saints began in the fourth century. At first, it was observed on the Sunday after the Feast of Pentecost; this was to link the disciples who received the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the foundation of the Church, with those who were martyrs, giving their lives as witnesses for the faith. In the 8th century, a chapel to All Saints was dedicated in St. Peter’s on November 1st; and within a century this day was observed throughout Christendom as ‘All Saints’ Day’.
