Axelrodi Danio

Latin Name: Sundadanio Axelrodi

These fish are native to Greater Sundra Island of Borneo and Sumatra. Specifically off the east coast of Sumatra in the Indonesia Provinces of West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and South Kalimatan. These fish are not found on the north side of the island. Depending on the area on the island they are found depends on the coloration of these amazing fish.

Their native habitats are Black water streams and pools associated with ancient forest peat swamps. The water is stained brown due to the release of tanins from the decaying plant matter in the water. The bottom is scattered with fallen leaves, twigs and branches from over hanging trees. These precious biotopes are under threat from rubber/palm oil plantations, building developments and other human activities.

The Axelrodi Danios max out at 20-22mm.

A good sized aquarium is needed for them to be the happiest they can be. You would be looking at 30 gallons and up.

Water conditions for them are
Temp: 73-79 F (23-26 C)
pH: 4.0 to 6.5
Hardness: 0-5 H

When you first get these fish in your tanks you should feed live food to them till they settle into their new environment and then you can switch them to frozen or freeze dried foods keep in mind you are looking at micro foods like Daphnia and Micro bloodworms. When you get to feeding frozen you can chop up regular bloodworms for them as well.

These fish are timid, shy schooling fish so they should be kept is larger schools and either in a species only tank or with fish the same size as them. The larger school allows them to calm down and become more social and less timid. If you do mix the different color morphs of these fish there is a chance of hyrbrids being born if they start breeding.

The Gender differences for the Axelrodi Danios are mainly that the males when mature are more colorful and slimmer then the females and that the a**l fin on the females are colorless.

If you do want to breed these amazing fish here are some hints to help with the process. pH should be kept below 6.0 and try to keep it at the same level if possible as these fish don't like changes in the water and can make it harder to breed. Black water conditions should be used as it is most like their native habitat and using leaves and wood can help lower the pH and keep it lower. It is a good idea to let them breed in their normal tank keeping it heavily planted and species only that way they don't get stressed during the breeding process. Keep them well fed with a mix of live and froen foods before and during the breeding process.

Tiger Oscar and Albino Tiger Oscar
Latin name: Astronotus Ocellatus
There are 13 different types of Oscars
They are native to South America specifically Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, French Guiana, and Columbia.
Average life span is 7 to 8 years in a properly maintained aquarium
They are at breedin age just over 1 year old
Tiger Oscars get to 12-14 inches(30.5 to 35.5 cm)
A typical tank set up for them is an open aquarium with a lot of rocks and possible large well rooted plants like giant vallisneria
Temperture 71-80 F (22-27 C)
pH 6.8 to 7.6 ideal is about 7.2
Compatibility for other fish is anything that is similar size and aggression level make sure not to put anything that can fit in their mouths as it will be eat.
Oscars are very intelligent fish and outgoing as well. They can differenciate between owner and other people and after being fed can sometimes be petted.
Oscars play by moving rocks and plants around their aquariums.
Make sure to properly filter and do regular water changes with Oscars as they are messy and have a massive appetite.
Most people feed Oscars live food but be careful doing that as it can pass on any diseases the live food is carrying. If you can you can feek flake, pellet and frozen foods while supplementing their diet with Krill, freeze dried shrimp, blodworms and even veggies like peas, lettuce cucumber and zucchini. It is always a good idea to give a varied diet to any fish.
It isnt easy properly sexing oscars unless they are full grown as the males tend to be larger and more colorful. you can try venting them but it can be hard and is the only sure way to make sure.
Oscars when breeding tend to be territorial. There is a chance during breeding that the male could kill the female so keeping a close eye on the fish during the breeding process. While picking mates Oscars will lock lips for hours at a time and if one backs out there is a chance of the one backing out getting attacked. You should add a piece of slate or a piece of flate rock for them to lay their eggs on.
