Did you know that the first hardwood flooring in Toronto dates back to the early 19th century?

James Thompson, a skilled carpenter from England, arrived in 1825 and introduced elegant hardwood floors to replace the muddy dirt floors.

James had heard tales of the vast, untouched forests of Canada, teeming with magnificent trees that could provide the perfect timber for his craft.

Upon his arrival, he quickly found work building houses for the growing population.

However, he noticed that most homes were still constructed with simple dirt floors, which became muddy and messy during the rainy seasons. James saw an opportunity to introduce a more refined and durable flooring solution: hardwood.

With a vision in mind, James ventured into the dense forests surrounding York, selecting the finest oak and maple trees. He meticulously cut, planed, and smoothed the wood, creating beautiful, sturdy planks.

His first major project was the home of John Strachan, an influential clergyman and educator in the town.

Strachan's home was already one of the most impressive in York, but he was eager to make it even more distinguished.

When James proposed the idea of installing hardwood floors, Strachan was intrigued and agreed to the project. Over several weeks, James and his team of workers laid the hardwood planks with precision and care, creating a stunning, polished floor that gleamed in the candlelight.

The transformation was remarkable. The hardwood floor not only added an air of elegance to Strachan's home but also proved to be practical, as it was easy to clean and maintained its beauty over time.

News of this innovative flooring spread quickly through the town, and soon, other prominent residents sought James' services to enhance their own homes.

As more homes and public buildings adopted hardwood flooring, the demand for skilled carpenters and high-quality timber grew. James Thompson's success helped establish a thriving industry in York, and his legacy continued as the town evolved into the bustling city of Toronto.
