Niagara Tenants Union

We are based in St. Catharines and hope to expand to support other communities in Niagara Region to organize themselves.

Niagara Tenants Union is a grassroots network of volunteer tenants and activists who are working together to build tenant power and resistance against skyrocketing rents, gentrification and displacement, and harmful landlords. We are direct action focused and aim to respond to the housing crisis by getting organized and building autonomous tenant power to fight back against things like evictions,

The city is looking to dump 1000 luxury condos at the old hospital site in one of the poorest parts of town. Please write to tell them that this development should not go ahead without a significant amount of subsidized housing and community supports for the existing neighborhood residents who are struggling with extreme poverty, homelessness, drug use, and mental health issues.

If the current developer is unwilling to build for the existing community, then the city should expropriate the land and wait for an appropriate developer.

The city and region both recently declared a "crisis" of homelessness, addiction, and mental health. Back those words up with action and say NO to more luxury condos that none of us can afford!

Thanks to the community members who attended last Thursday's open house for the proposed redevelopment of 142 Queenston St. (the former hospital site). If you didn't have an opportunity to provide your feedback at the meeting, we've launched an online engagement page where you can share input or questions - at https://www.engagestc.ca/142queenston.
If you missed the meeting, the page includes some background information and a link to the proposed plans and documents that you can review, and still provide input.

Developers who bought Ontario Greenbelt land linked to Ford government 11/29/2022

Crooked politicians and their rich developer friends are a primary cause of the housing crisis. Their logic of "building more" will never offer an actual solution.

Because of ongoing capacity issues, Niagara Tenants Union is on a partial hiatus until the spring.

We will still be meeting bi-monthly and working on getting better organized, as well as contacting tenants and potential volunteers who have already reached out to us.

We don't have the capacity to take on anything new at this time.

We will continue to post incendiary rhetoric and memes.

The business community is popping up fake houses during a housing and homelessness crisis. Lots of people would legit live in these things that will probably be destroyed in two months. Pretty fu***ng tonedeaf.
