Today is Powley Day in Ontario, celebrating the landmark Supreme Court victory for Métis rights led by Steve and Roddy Powley!
Award-winning Métis artist Amanda Rheaume has released a new single “I Won’t Hide”. Inspired by the Powley family’s courage, the single celebrates the origins of this historic moment: the story of Steve and Roddy’s moose hunt.

On September 19, we mark the historic anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Powley case.
The Powley case was—and remains—the only high court decision that has confirmed the existence of a rights-bearing Métis community in Canada. This defining moment in Métis history affirmed that Metis rights are protected by Section 35 of the Constitution Act and established an important legal precedent in modern Indigenous law.
Last year we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Powley case with the release of a powerful Métis rights documentary, “The Métis Hunt for Justice: the Powley Story.”

Hey, MNO community! Did you know that in 2023, something monumental happened? We signed the Métis Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement! This agreement takes our Self-Government journey to the next level, building upon the foundation set by our 2019 agreement and making it legally binding between Canada and the MNO.
But what else does the 2023 agreement mean for MNO Citizens? Let's break it down.
Clear Path to Recognition: These agreements pave the way for MNO to become a recognized public Indigenous government.
Expanded Law-Making Powers: Once the transition is complete, our new Métis Government will have the authority to make laws in crucial areas like citizenship, leadership selection, internal operations, and Métis child and family services.
Ongoing Negotiations: The 2023 Agreement doesn't stop there! It also commits us to ongoing negotiations towards a core self-government treaty within two years.
We want to hear from you! What do you think of these exciting developments? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and let's keep the conversation going!
