Joanne MacDonald's sculptures play with space, light and shadows, and provide a variety of perspectives depending how you choose to place it. Here are 5 of our favourites, with "Engage IV."

Inspired by the delicate balance of nature and relationships, Joanne works almost exclusively with found, natural, and recycled elements... Her artwork, like a mirror, contrasts the balance and imperfection of life. Pensive and introspective, Joanne’s sculptures, often kinetic, allude to individuals and their relationships, creating an emotional dialogue between art and viewer and inviting them to interact with the pieces.

What other ways would you position this sculpture?

Hi all!! Come join if you’re in town!

Please give a warm welcome to Toronto-based color field artist, Lawrence Morton!

Lawrence Morton's goal is to create large luminous works that add a spark of joy and beauty to people’s lives.

His painting process typically begins by stripping down his subject matter to its essence and applying multiple layers of transparent colour. Over time, the colours interact, overlap and coalesce, creating a sense of depth and interest.

He works in oils, taking advantage of their unique lustre, richness, and long drying time. His process is gradual and deliberate. Some pieces can come together within days while others take weeks or even months to complete.

Inspired by artists such as Jules Olitski, Leon Berkowtiz and Mark Rothko, his work represents an escape from our fast-paced world—to a place where time slows down and even stands still, allowing viewers a moment of reflection or quiet contemplation.

Largely self-taught, he studied art at Queen’s University and the Toronto School of Art and was awarded a grant to the Chateau d’Orquevaux Residency Program in France. When he’s not making messes in the studio, you can find him hanging out with his family and their two dogs, getting lost in a good book, playing piano, or cheering on the Toronto Raptors.

You can come see Lawrence Morton's work at the Gallery very soon! Until then, head to our website via the link in our bio. 07/27/2023

We are so excited to introduce John F. Ross to our artist roster at Ashdale Gallery!

The tradition of landscape painting in Canada is one of Pure Landscape – depicting the land as it truly is, largely free from symbolic content. John's work pursues a conceptual departure from this tradition, introducing the viewer to a new way of observing the land. The heavy simplification of symbolic forms and a tangible awareness for the physicality of painting create a platform from which to retell the Canadian landscape story. His goal is to create paintings that, in the footsteps of the European Symbolists, emphasize an interpretable meaning behind line, shape, and subject. The result is a collection of narratives about a place populated with the remnants of human influence and reclaimed by a wilder element.

"My stories always begin as an impulsive set of images that collect within the borders of a scene. Though guided by a structured conceptual theme, these scenes don’t profess any specific or absolute meaning. They are an invitation to seek out an untold story."

We can't wait for you to visit the Gallery and see John F. Ross' work in person! 07/21/2023

We are deeply humbled and incredibly honoured to introduce internationally acclaimed senior artist, Dr. George Littlechild. kinanâskomitin, George.

"If I were to ask myself why I create the art I do; I would have to answer: “It is what I was born to do. It is my passion, my joy, as my art has been there throughout my life’s journey!”

If I were asked what kind of art I create; I would answer by saying, “It is art that speaks from the heart, the social and the Political.”

My art is charged with energy & color, vibrant, magical, & thus enabling the soul to travel.

I envision, I rely on the intuitive, the spiritual, the emotional. To tell stories through my art. I am a storyteller, a visualist. A conveyer of messages…

I began to create art as a small boy. My foster mother saw that I had a talent, at a very young age. She was encouraging, loving… She saw the gift in me. Scribblers were filled, art lessons began at an early age… Art school, exhibition and books, lectures, and teaching.

In my work, I am committed to righting the wrongs that First Nations peoples have endured by creating art that focuses on cultural, social and political injustices. As an artist, educator and cultural worker, my goal is a better world. It is my job to show the pride, strength and beauty of First Nations people and cultures, and contribute to the betterment of mankind."

We are very excited to introduce Mary Lottridge to our artist roster!

Mary works in acrylics on wood cradles, and the paintings often possess textured and collaged surfaces. Her paintings frequently revolve around a central foreground image, usually rendered in a crisp decisive manner with a high degree of detail and sharp focus, with backgrounds possessing a more elusive quality, layered and washed-out and containing partially covered shapes and lines, as well as pattern, colour and text. The work has a strongly contemporary feel and is technically proficient and visually striking.

“The bedrock of my work is an urgent engagement with materials and image and the vexing uncertainty and simultaneously thrilling act of painting. Milton Glaser says ‘Making things is one of the truly remedial aspects of being human’. He also says that finding things is not the same as making things. I want to make paintings."

Please give a warm welcome to Andrea Soos!

Andrea Soos is well known for her playful abstractions that combine creative mark-making, patterning, and gestural application of colour. Working with a fresh modern palette, Soos’ paintings allow the viewer to freely journey around the canvas, enjoying the twists and turns of her engaging compositions.

Soos works intuitively across each canvas, creating unexpected and tactful brushstrokes in her process-driven round.

Although she may not know the outcome of the piece when she begins, the artwork evolves as a visceral and therapeutic practice, driven by music and song lyrics. Viewers of Soos’ work connect with the many visual entry-points and feel at liberty to apply their own experiences and history to the marks on the canvas.

Say hello to the next artist on our roster, Vikki Drummond!

From early childhood, Vikki has been exploring her creative side, opting for crayons and paints over dolls. As a teenager, she mostly focused on drawing skills. The art of shadowing and infusing light with a charcoal pencil formed the foundation for her future work.

Post-secondary prompted a sensible choice, and Vikki enrolled in a Business Administration program, which led to a two-decade career in Sales and Marketing. While her beloved art was on hold, Vikki met her adorable husband, and together, they owned and operated several restaurants and a bar; raised a son and daughter and three mutts.

Vikki never lost her love of gummy bears, strawberry lip gloss, and daily trips down rabbit holes to colourful worlds she yearned to explore. In 2000 she took a part-time position with a Fashion House. The work fueled a passion for costume and expressive dressing and inspired her to take her whimsical side more seriously.

We are so grateful to have you at Ashdale Gallery!!

Please give a warm welcome to Gabrielle Strong!

Prior to attending Emily Carr, Gabrielle spent five exciting years travelling to over 70 countries on all seven continents by sea on a luxury cruise-liner, leaving her with a deep connection to the ocean. Those years at sea left their mark, and coupled with twenty years living on the Pacific West Coast, she is forever drawn to themes of water and reflection, which occur throughout her art practice.

Inspired by the beauty of big monochromatic moody skies, through her paintings, Gabrielle seeks to capture the quiet sense of calm those overcast days evoke. Primarily working in oils, she is always searching for the moment the veil is lifted, revealing a glimmer of light on the horizon.

Welcome to the Ashdale Gallery family, Jason McCrea!

In his current body of work, Jason McCrea (Siloh) explores the idea of hostility and harmony in the urban landscape. Oftentimes leaning towards one more than the other and using his strong use of color to balance the elements together. This comes from a deep appreciation for the present moments he encounters in his day to day life. Painting these places for how they felt in memory rather than what they are in reality. It is a visual representation of what he calls“the alpha state” or better known as a meditative state. Through this lens, these everyday places can be seen in a more meaningful way.

We are so grateful to have Jason McCrea on our artist roster! 07/01/2023

We are thrilled to have Vancouver based artist John Capitano on our artist roster!

"In 1986 I began to paint using a system of chance to select colors. This strategy is as follows:

I choose an area to be painted. I then throw a dart at the dartboard bull’s eye. When a numbered wedge is struck, I then paint with it's predetermined hue.

Carried out in a playful spirit, this arbitrary system results in unique color combinations. To resolve a painting my game-playing shifts to problem-solving, still maintaining this chance process.

I continue to work within this process because my artistic concerns still revolve around elements of play and discovery. However, while my concern is with visual dynamics – the play of colour, visual effects and the visceral nature of paint, its various applications and interactions – I am intrigued by the tension between these strictly painterly or abstract concerns and representational imagery."
