Attention Parents, Caregivers, and Educators

We've recently received an email from someone who was targeted by a deepfake nudify app. These types of apps are something we've investigated and warned about in detail in an article we wrote back in December 2023 a must-read for every parent, caregiver, educator, and teen:

Today, we looked at one of these apps that we tested, and found that its website currently claims over 100,000 active users and has processed more than 19 million photos to create fake n**es.

We've seen cases in Canadian high schools where teen girls were targeted by male classmates using these apps. Since the start of this school year, we've been addressing this urgent issue in our high school digital literacy and internet safety programs, highlighting the significant risks these apps pose to teens and that in Canada such an app used to target another student or teacher is illegal.

Please forward this post to every parent, caregiver, and educators you know! Emphasize to your kids that if they know a fellow teen who is using one of these apps, report it to a teacher, school counsellor, principal, or a parent immediately!

Contrary to what some teens think, these apps aren't funny, they are extremely dangerous and can cause significant emotional and psychological trauma, which can and will lead to suicidal ideations

NOTE - we are also aware of new AI technology that will do the same thing but then turn the picture into a hypers*xualized n**e video!

Do you need to get in touch with your child?

Consider a basic phone instead of a smartphone.

Smartphones are quickly changing childhood for children. Playing outdoors, spending time with friends, reading books and hanging out with family is happening a lot less to make room for hours of snap chatting, instagramming, and catching up on You Tube.

When you are considering what communication device is best for your child, it is important first to ask what is the purpose of the device?

If calling and texting is all that is needed, we encourage parents to consider a basic phone before a smartphone.

The majority of problems associated with smartphones are because of the access to an internet browser, the app store and social media.

In some cases, it may be easier and even cheaper to give your child your old iPhone instead of buying a basic phone. The cost and time are well worth the investment though.

Childhood is too short to waste on a smartphone!

👉Delay smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade with the Wait Until 8th pledge!

👍Delay social media until 16+ !

👉Take it slowly on the tech front with a basic phone.

👉Never hand over a fully loaded smartphone to a child to start. Strip is down! Take off the internet browser, disable access to the App Store, just say "not yet" to social media and resist putting games on it too. Keep is simple!

👍Keep all devices out of bedrooms especially at night.

Our Aftercare Team was contacted about an 11-year-old little girl who was exploited on the well-known app, TikTok. She was bored and trying to connect with peers in the outside world. She posted videos throughout her whole day including herself singing in the shower. By the end of the day men began asking her for s*xual pictures. ⁠

She did not understand why they were asking her for things like this because she did not connect the idea that adult men would be paying attention to her videos. When traffickers get pictures or videos of young children they can sell the images within a day to thousands of people throughout the world without ever leaving their homes. We are grateful to local government agencies like Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) that we can refer families to. ⁠
