The Norwood Curling Club held its annual Invitational Senior Men’s Turkey Bonspiel on Nov. 28. The Turkey Bonspiel has been going on for more than 30 years (minus a two-year COVID break).
The bonspiel is strictly an invitational bonspiel which means that teams must be invited in order to participate and all curlers must be 50 years of age or older. Other than Norwood, teams from Omemee, Peterborough, Campbellford, Ennismore and Lindsay curling clubs participated. A total of eight teams competed in the early draw and six teams competed in the late draw with each team playing two games over the course of the day.
Winners were determined on a points earned basis over their two games. The prizes not surprisingly were frozen turkeys and were awarded to the top three teams. Early draw and first place winner overall with a total of 36.5 points, was the hometown Norwood team of Don Savery (skip), Andy Crowell (vice), Dan Pichie (second) and Bill Borosiuk (lead).
A Norwood team also came out on top of the late draw games with an overall score of 35.75 points with Denton Curry (skip), Dan Lemon (vice), Larry Sullivan (second) and Leo Christi (lead). Teams from the Peterborough Curling took both second and third places of the late draw with 21.75 points and 21 points respectively.
The Norwood Curling Club would like to extend thanks to Norwood Foodland for their sponsorship of the bonspiel, without the assistance of Chad Jolicoeur and his staff at the local Foodland, this event would not have been possible. A special thank you also goes to Becky’s Restaurant for providing an array of tasty soups for the players to enjoy.
The sport of curling has a long-standing tradition in Norwood. Early records indicate that organized curling was taking place in the village in the mid to late 1800s likely on Norwood’s Mill Pond. Construction of the first man made arena took place in 1890.
The present day facilities is actually the sixth building to be used for curling in the community. The current building opened in 1978 and is the first purpose built curling facility in the village to have the capability of making and maintaining artificial ice.
In the mid-70s, the desire for a new dedicated curling rink was very strong; a committee was stuck and plans were put in motion to build a 160-foot long, four sheet rink to be called the Norwood Centennial Sports Complex. With a total cost of nearly $350,000 the committee had their work cut out for them, first an agreement was arranged with the Norwood Agricultural Society that would allow the new building to be built on the fair property.
