CGC Quick FAQs! We get these questions frequently… what does NRC and LR stand for? And, why is it important? Let’s learn together. Swipe through or keep reading!

NRC: Noise Reduction Coefficient. It is a measure of how much sound is absorbed by a given material. It is listed as a decimal and relates to percentage sound absorbed. It is especially important in open office plan environments where there are few full height walls to help absorb or block sound.

LR: Light Reflectance. It is a measure of the percentage of light which is reflected off of a given panel surface. Typically, the whiter and smoother the ceiling panel, the higher the LR value. It is important because there can be savings in both initial construction costs as well as long-tern energy costs. The concept is to use the ceiling to reflect the light back into the occupied space.

We were honoured to welcome Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston , MLA Keith Bain, Victoria County Warden Bruce Morrison, and Councilor Paul MacNeil to CGC’s Little Narrows Quarry in Cape Breton, where we briefed them on our $104 million investment to revitalize and relaunch a state-of-the-art gypsum mine and create more than 100 local jobs. This past weekend the CGC team connected with the Strathmore and Wheatland communities at the Strathmore Stampede promoting our new investment in Western Canada and promoting the jobs which we will be recruiting for in 2024 and 2025.

Additionally, the Trellis Society in Strathmore hosted a visit for a few CGC delegates this weekend to help us better understand the programming offered in the Strathmore, Rocky View and Wheatland areas.

In this month's CGC Employee Spotlight, we recognize Brandon Gothreau 🏍️, who serves as an exceptional foreman at our Oakville Facility. Brandon has been part of the CGC team since October 17, 2016, and has continuously exemplified the company's values. He credits collaborating with his colleagues for overcoming challenges and achieving goals, and he emphasizes how his colleagues challenge each other to be better daily. As a foreman, Brandon puts his effort into ensuring employees receive coaching, encouragement, and training to reach their career goals. Brandon is also passionate about the manufacturing process and takes pride in watching raw materials transform into the finished products that we serve to our clients.

His positivity, coupled with his relentless devotion to tight deadlines, ensures that the customer receives what they need quickly. Brandon incredibly grew into his foreman role after starting as a Supply Chain operator. He advanced to become a backup supervisor then a full-time supervisor before becoming a foreman. Brandon's achievements are a result of his resilience, positive attitude, and inspiring mindset. He shared that training and engaging with leadership mentors also contributed to his growth.

Brandon's advice to new CGC employees is to take advantage of the many opportunities available within the company, ask questions, and get involved.

Last week, Canadian Gypsum Company (CGC) hosted the 72nd annual Ontario Mine Rescue Provincial Competition, running from June 13 to 16. The event brought together eight mine rescue teams from across the province to test their mining emergency response knowledge and skills. Organized by Ontario Mine Rescue (OMR), the competition aimed to improve emergency response readiness in the mining industry.

We congratulate all of the teams for their dedication to maintaining a safe and secure mining industry in Ontario. Congratulations to the winning team, and to each and every one of them for their passion for emergency response preparedness.
