A 'perfect storm' that's brewing across the country. Animal shelters are overcapacity and in crisis, with some on the verge of closing their doors for good.

Fueling the crisis is a complicated host of issues. The type of animals arriving at shelters has changed, there’s a vet shortage and the cost of living has skyrocketed. It’s left shelters operating at capacity, with growing waitlists to bring animals in.

The award-winning journalist Holly Lake takes a closer look at the crisis and what you need to know about it in our latest article.

Read about it here: https://humanecanada.ca/2023/12/22/struggling-shelters/

If you see an injured turtle in Ontario, even if you are travelling, please retrieve the turtle and don’t leave it to suffer, make note of the exact location and call the Ontario turtle conservation centre (home of Ontario’s turtle hospital) at 705-741-5000. If you are in the Highlands, you can also text us immediately at 705-854-2888. We each have teams of volunteers that can meet you wherever you are in Ontario and get the turtle to the hospital. Leaving the turtle often results in a needless death of a sacred soul.

The Ontario SPCA is giving away free emergency decals for your front door to let first responders know there are pets inside your home. In the event of an emergency like a fire, it can help the chances of firefighters being able to rescue your pets. To request a free emergency decal while quantities last, visit https://bit.ly/3NmutHT

You should never kid nap kittens without checking for mom. Another important message, so spread the word. To all those owners with pregnant moms and babies contact someone for help. Giving away free kittens, not vet checked or fixed is not a good thing.

For more information on HOWL, please email [email protected] or DM us with the best way to communicate.

HOWL is a pet-related grief & loss support network. We offer ways to navigate the change and changes that grief lets in while centering the love and beauty of our pet relationship.

We know first-hand the way our world changes when our pet is no longer with us and we know there is not one right way to grieve, mourn or remember.

We created our Circles of Care program (one-on-one and group support coming soon) and Growing with Grief kits (available now, inspired by our .initiative pals). We want to acknowledge the many faces of grief by providing supportive spaces for counselling, community and connection.

🐕‍🦺🛍DOGGY BAGS🛍🦮

We are excited to announce our new program called DOGGY BAGS. The program will be available to those in and closely surrounding areas (as it’s a “pick-up”-only program & pick-up is in Newmarket).

What is it❓

Starting February 1st, 2023, low-Income households with a dog(s) can come & pick up a FREE monthly bag of supplies/food from our rescue.

When will this take place❓

Each month during the first week of that month, you can arrange to come and pick up your bag.

How to get your bag 🛍

You will need to fill out an order form here: https://form.jotform.com/230184652878061 & once we receive your order form your bag will be prepared and ready for pick up!

Why are we doing this❓

This program allows us to share our donations with those who also need some help, donations that our organization generously receives each week from our community. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to support our local doggy community by helping their humans, and in turn, keeping dogs safe and happy, even if their owners fall under hard times.

Please share 🙏🏼

We look forward to helping you & your doggies 🙏🏼🐾❤️

This cat is a mystery. Workers thought she jumped off a delivery truck running into a pet distribution centre on Henry Street in Brantford one week ago. Turns out she is spayed, No Micro Chip and a green ear tattoo. To my knowledge and that of others this ear tattoo has not been done in years. If you know better please message me. She looks like she was cared for possibly by a colony caretaker or someone. She is acting feral like lunging, hissing and swatting. Everyone would like to see her returned to where she came from and that could be anywhere from the Toronto area or Brantford. They believe the truck stopped at these locations and I called them. They are all in busy strip malls which makes me think she possibly jumped on and off the truck in Brantford.

She needs a foster home and trust me we know how hard this is to find. It is really so easy to help her by providing a room, love and patience. Please message me if you can do this. A difference can be made and a feral can be saved.
