We hear a lot of concerns about hearing aids and moisture, sweat, hot flashes. And get questions ranging from, โWhat happens if they fall in the water?โ to โCan I swim laps wearing them?โ
Weโve got you โ and summer โ covered! Our hearing aids, except custom fit, are rated โIP 68โ on the very official sounding Ingress Protection Rating Chart. For solids, the 6 means full protection against dust and similar particles (gardening โ ok!). And for water, the 8 offers protection against full immersion up to 1 metre or more in depth for more than 30 minutes!
What does this mean?
1. You can perspire and sweat worry-free
2. You wonโt harm your hearing aids if youโre caught in the rain
3. Just donโt wear them swimming intentionally*
*If you are pushed into a pool or the lake your hearing aids should be okay. The person who did it, maybe not?

Did you know that a stroke can cause sudden hearing loss?
Sudden hearing loss, often in one ear, can happen all at once or over a few days. Most of the time, doctors don't know why it happens. However, sudden hearing loss might be an early sign of a stroke. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada says a stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain and ear is blocked.
Research shows that sudden hearing loss is linked to a higher risk of stroke compared to hearing loss that comes with age. If you have recently suffered from a stroke, a hearing test is highly recommended.
Pickleball is all the rage, BUT should you be wearing hearing protection while playing? ๐ค
At 70 โ 80 decibels, pickleball is more likely to bother the neighbours than harm your hearing. However, people with tinnitus or sensitive hearing may find the high pitched โpopโ when the ball hits the paddle irritating.
Options to reduce the noise include:
Sound dampening paddle
Foam balls
Custom earplugs

As May wraps up this week, we wanted to leave you with one last tip to remember:
Give your ears a break! When attending loud events, take breaks by spending a few minutes away from the noise. Once the event is over, spend the next day in a quiet space to allow your ears to recover.
While not often talked about, did you know ear wax (cerumen) build-up and blockage is really common? Ear wax build-up can be painful and even cause dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus (โringingโ in the ears), and hearing loss.
If you think wax build-up is affecting you, book an appointment to see one of our Hearing Care Professionals โ and avoid using Q-Tips in the meantime!
Signia is bringing health and hearing into one place with the MyWellBeing app. Signia hearing aidsโ built-in motion sensor feeds the MyWellBeing app so the user can see their step count (My Steps), activity (MyActivity), hearing aid wear time (My WearTime), and interaction with others (My Conversations).
TIP TUESDAY:
Turn up the music! (But not too much) โ According to the World Health Organization, over 50% of people aged 12-35 listen to music at damaging levels. Our advice? Keep the volume below 60% to reduce the impact on your hearing health.
Take a break, soak up the sunshine, and make unforgettable memories with your loved ones. Whether you're heading out on an adventure or enjoying a cozy staycation, HearCANADA is here to ensure you donโt miss a moment.
๐ Remember, great hearing makes great memories. If you need us, we're just a call away. Happy long weekend! ๐

๐๐
TIP TUESDAY:
Spring is in the air, flowers are blooming, and the grass is ready to be cut โ but before you start up the lawnmower, consider protecting your ears with ear plugs or earmuffs.
Safe sound levels are below 70 decibels (dBA) and a lawnmower runs at 80-100 dBA., so ear protection is encouraged when tending to your lawn.
Did you know researchers have linked hearing with a reduced risk of dementia?
A recent study from Denmark concluded that people affected by hearing loss have a 13% higher risk of developing dementia than people with normal hearing. People with severe hearing loss have the highest risk so treatment with hearing aids is key, and the earlier the better.

SO WHY THE ALARMING FORECAST?
There are numerous misconceptions and general lack of knowledge about hearing loss that contributes to a delay in treatment. Though hearing loss is a common condition, it is widely undertreated. People often assume that it is not a serious condition that needs immediate medical attention.
Many people believe it only impacts older adults and contribute to stigmatizing attitudes that lead to inaction. What's shocking? Over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices!
๐ Today, we celebrate , a reminder of the importance of prioritizing our well-being. At HearCANADA, we're committed to promoting not just hearing health, but overall wellness.
Did you know that hearing loss can appear along with other health conditions? We suggest booking an appointment to assess your hearing and rule out any concerns.
Let's join hands to ensure a healthier future for all.
