What is the agri-food alternative being proposed?
DRFH is proposing "Sustainable Local Food Systems Everywhere!" (SuLFSE) These systems will provide sustainable alternatives for farmers and others. SuLFS are small, interconnected yet self-sufficient local food systems that grow regeneratively, preserve when necessary and distribute this local food . The prototype system will start around Carp, Ontario. Once it is appropriately scaled up, it will be replicated in accordance with the principles derived through experience with the prototype. One principle, for example, would be "adaptation to the local environment".

Good Morning! Our project was awarded a grant by Desjardins and will be featured on their page at noon today, August 12th. Help out our organization by heading over to their page and liking and sharing the post of our Root Cellar. This project is fueled by the problems of climate change, human nutrition and food security. Desjardins

Wondering how to spend your $210 Canada Carbon Rebate? Deep Roots Food Hub might be a good bet! Its vision is "Sustainable Local Food Systems Everywhere", and Carp/West Ottawa will be the first one. We're a 100 % volunteer organization. If we grow and replicate, climate change could be reversed in a few years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECHYChDUfhQ

HELP WANTED! On the heels of the Great Ottawa Potato Rescue, we need to grow the plant-rich diet that we need for human and non-human life on this planet! This can be done locally - everyone in Ottawa could be fed on food grown within our city boundaries! This coming week is critical for planting! If you could spare a couple of hours now and then helping on our west end plots, you could earn free food and learn about regenerative methods.

I had the privilege today to spend time with some very special members of our community who continue to support our community gardens and Food Bank.

I am so excited that as a result of the generosity of JoJo's community garden in Stittsville and Bimbo Canada's , the Deep Roots Food Hub will start creating our Permaculture Food Forest this weekend. Stay tuned.

Potatoes 101: Nutrition Facts and Health Effects 05/15/2024

Potatoes are not usually praised for their protein content. There isn’t a large amount, but what protein there is, has all of the essential amino acids. There are also vitamin and minerals. Remember to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables though, not just potatoes… 😊

Potatoes 101: Nutrition Facts and Health Effects Potatoes are types of starchy root vegetables called tubers. They are high in nutrients like potassium and vitamin C, and have many health benefits.

A Big thank you to all our volunteers for the Great Potato Rescue and all the people who stepped in at the last moment to help out.

We couldn’t have imagined that so many people would drop by or that so many people would come to just help out others around them.

So thank you to our caring community, your help is greatly appreciated.

We're sorry that due to an unexpectedly high demand, some people were disappointed because our potatoes disappeared so quickly (8000 pounds in about 1 hour). We learned something - follow us Deep Roots Food Hub -we're just getting started!!

Amazing!! All of our potatoes are gone! Over 8000 lbs in about 1 hour!! Thank you for helping to reduce food waste!

05/10/2023

This Saturday morning, Deep Roots Food Hub will sell off produce remaining in its unique off-grid root cellar at 230 Davidson’s Side Road. Designed specifically to hold up to 70,000 lbs of root vegetables and other produce like cabbage and onions, it’s the “anchor” facility for DRFH, an organization that intends to make Canadians and the world, food secure….one rutabaga and one local food system, at a time.

Other than organic rutabagas and potatoes, and some even grown regeneratively, there will be lots of opportunities to find out how DRFH and sister organizations like ExerFarm, intend to achieve food and climate security, and better nutrition as well. You’ll also listen to an expert on the soil biome who is creating a Permaculture Food Forest and a beautiful “Mandala” garden on site. There will be a Ford F150 Lightning truck providing electric power. You can view the root cellar and find out how it works on only a few hundred watts of solar power.

Who knows! You might even pick up a few tricks to make your own backyard garden more sustainable and more able to provide some of those delicious micronutrients you might be missing. There will be prizes, and some activities for the kids.

Join us in a new community garden pilot project for the 2023 growing season. We're looking for 30 families in Carp and the surrounding area.

Who is getting excited to start their seedlings? Here at Deep Roots Food Hub, we love to support our local farmers. While "local" usually means the West Carleton area for us, we'd love to profile any Ottawa (or nearby) farms that sell seeds.

We know that https://gaiaorganics.ca/about-gaia-organics/ is a local provider for seeds.

Tell us in the comments about other local farms that sell seeds!
