PAPILLON
PROJECT BY VY BUI
Children are the future of society. They are living messages that we send to a time we cannot see. Because of this, child education and early childhood development is considered vital to ensure they are well-equipped with all
that they need to face the world. This design project focuses on creating a
learning environment that stimulate the child’s psychological as well as
physical growth, as they explore their abilities and interact with their peers.
As big cities becoming more populated, one of the big gest concerns relates to
how we can give our children the outdoor time they need. Spaces in daycares are
limited, and a great amount of these infrastructures are located in larger buildings and/or buildings without any outdoor spaces within the premises. Furthermore, most of these centres functions the traditional way of putting children in their assigned spaces, and have them stay in the same room throughout the day. Understanding
the limitations of regular daycares, this project aims toward a design that allows
children to be active, whether indoor or outdoor, learn and have fun at the same time.

The Kenwood Community Centre will target all members of the Arnprior, ON to allow the community to grow, celebrate, and learn together. There will be multiple spots for people to gather, classrooms and creative spaces for individuals to flourish. Supportive spaces such as daycares and children’s day camps will help families in the community. NEXUM EXHIBITION
PROJECT BY SEREINE ELBALKHI
We as individuals actively interact, engage, connect with, and shape our environments; as environments interact, engage, connect with, and shape us. Being human entails living in time and place; our lives would be impossible to survive without temporal and spatial frames of reference (Scorch, 2013). We wouldn't know where to go or when to go. However, in order to experience and make sense of the time and space that we live in, it is necessary to engage with the environment around you. This allows you to realize that it is real since life happens in an environment not only because of it, but because of it and via contact with it. And as designers, our aim is to create spaces that have a favorable influence on people and linger in their minds for as long as possible. When designing, you need to consider three key components must be defined: identity, community, and purpose. After giving the structure a meaning, it's time to give it a physical purpose by allowing your audience to interact with it using all of their senses, not just sight. Individuals prefer to take in information through their senses and use it to generate consciousness. People also recall things better when all of their senses are engaged, but we must be careful not to overstimulate them, since this may result in overwhelmed sensations. As a result, it is critical to consider how you might create a functional environment that may elicit a variety of emotions, allowing you to feel more connected to it at a slower pace. Touch, smell, sight, sound, and taste are our five senses. These senses differ from space to space, and depending on the environment that we are building, we may employ them creatively and in a unique way. “The more senses we engage, the more strongly we are tied to a moment, an object, a space. As a result, design is evolving to incorporate sensory experience into the places where we live and work” (O’Gara, 2019).

THE MILL
PROJECT BY SARAH DAOUST
When considering spaces of archiving, a museum of fine art held within an adaptive reuse building provides the perfect blend. Situated in the heart of Ottawa, this interactive art museum
will offer a world of exploration, history and emotion for the users. By taking an existing building from the Ottawa area and using it to both showcase Ottawa’s history and artists’ work.
This building will encapsulate character and architectural history while the interior provides a space for guests to admire the artwork. The design of this museum project will aim to challenge the status quo of plain-white-box exhibition spaces while providing Ottawa with a productive,
sustainable, and historical addition to the city.

PANDORA
PROJECT BY RYLIE DUNCAN
Navigating a higher education while taking care of your physical and mental health can feel like an impossible task. Mental health especially can be neglected as the price to pay for your degree - a reasonable sacrifice.
At Pandora, a coliving complex for female grad students in the heart of downtown
Ottawa, students are guided on a path of self healing through community gathering
and empowerment while they are completing their education to foster a lifelong set of healthy habits and values.
Being surrounded by driven, successful women who are working to achieve the
same educational goals creates a sense of community and fosters empowerment. In combination with a residence that mirrors the feminine excellence of its students, Pandora will instill the confidence and strength required to make residents feel worthy in a patriarchal society.
The interior design executed at Pandora communicates power and luxury while
facilitating community gathering to empower our students to meet their full
potential. Exposed raw materials such as the original masonry of the building,
proudly preserved, communicates honesty in vulnerability. Raw materials juxtaposed with opulent finishes such as marble slabs and antique gold leaf detailing, polished at a grand scale, reflects the complexity of femininity -vulnerability and strength communicated harmoniously.

POINT B HOSTEL
PROJECT BY MIKAELA UGGELDAHL
When travelling from Point A to Point B and losing oneself exploring a new city, it is important for travellers to feel secure knowing their destination provides adequate lodgings.
The Point B hostel in downtown Ottawa ensures a safe, affordable, and flexible place where
travellers can rejuvenate and relax to prepare for the rest of their travel days. The design of Point B overcomes the negative connotations toward hostels by offering a variety of ways guests can choose to experience their vacation. Dormitory spaces can be booked for those seeking an affordable and social experience, while individual/group sleeping pods provide guests with a more private option. Additionally, accessibility is addressed in every space, including barrier-free sleeping pods, to ensure all guests are welcome to visit the Point B hostel.
Located on Rideau Street, the Point B hostel is walking distance from famous monuments, public transportation, the ByWard Market, and the Rideau Centre mall. The design of the hostel embodies Ottawa’s identity and culture to help travellers better immerse themselves in the city. For instance, the exterior architecture is reflected in the interior design through various arches and curves, the interior features many local artists’ pieces, and the library promotes a ‘take a book, leave a book’ system to encourage others to share local literature.
The Point B hostel is a fun, comfortable, and safe destination for any traveller to enjoy.

TUND CENTRE
PROJECT BY MICHAELA HARDY
Discovery centres and museums have changed education in many positive ways. They have allowed people to see real-life examples of historical and scientific theories. This senior project will be a subterranean/sub-aquatic discovery centre with a specialized marine biology/nautical research and development (R&D) space. It will have the ability to cater to large groups with flexible spaces, should individuals wish to host events at the centre, which will increase income.
The main goal of this design is to create an atmosphere that fosters learning through a variety of exhibits by implementing environmental psychology and adaptive technology methods. The use of white flooring and bright colours creates a bright atmosphere despite this centre having much shade due to its placement in a forest. Many custom feature elements were added to entice visitors into learning and exploring more. Natural materials were used in continuation with the natural theme that is present through the use of an organically shaped building. Technology was also strongly utilized in this design to aid in showcasing of even more information.

UNTITLED
PROJECT BY MARLY JOHNSON
The scope of the project focuses on personal development, motivation, and art inspiration for all users. This art-focused community centre assists creatives of all ages to bloom into the artists they are meant to become. The 24-hour community centre aims to create an open, welcoming space for all individuals willing to pursue art professionally or recreationally at times that are most convenient for them. Ensuring a multi-use space which intersects multiple art avenues, allows users to explore their creativity as well as gather and meet other creatives to enhance their experience. Educators from different art backgrounds will circulate the community centre to offer support, libraries will be available to help in deepening knowledge on diverse art forms, workshops for different age groups will be scheduled to meet the needs of all clientele, and schools will occupy the community centre to provide a broader education and success rate in art class.
The art centre was given the name “Untitled” to encourage creative freedom, and personal exploration. It is also meant to emphasize a space that holds no judgment. Users can define their art in a raw and subjective manner. While opting to create a “space of intersection”, intersectionality is at the forefront of this design. The artist Jean-Michel Basquiat highly influenced the process of this centre with his hybrid artistic approach, chaotic style, his avoidance in perfectionism, non-linear process work, the parallels he has found through facing overt racism and the reinforcement of intersectionality. With this in mind, naming the centre after one of his most famous pieces “Untitled, 1981” felt most suitable.

VACANT BUILDINGS TO HOMES
PROJECT BY MACKENZIE HOOVER
This project takes a look at many problems we face in our current times. There is a housing crisis where the cost of limited houses on the market has reached an all-time high. Building new homes is a way to fix part of this housing crisis but that also creates a new problem because new construction is unsustainable and poses issues towards the environment by creating large amounts of waste. There is also a vacancy issue and many people are unaware of the government-owned buildings that have no use when they could be adapted for a different need. This project offers a solution to all these issues by taking a look at adaptive reuse and the many existing vacant buildings that can be made to serve a different need of housing. This project will ensure that more housing can be created to keep up with the demands while maintaining sustainable values.
This project will be the prototype house that serves as a base for many other vacant buildings to follow and be adapted. The full scope of this project will incorporate as many vacant buildings in Ontario as it can to provide sustainable housing to meet the high housing demand.

ENCAPSULATE CAPSULE HOTEL
PROJECT BY KRYSTIAN MIERSMA
This capsule hotel will be geared more toward solo or small group travellers who will want to spend more time exploring the area then spending money on a hotel. Since this hotel is smaller than a regular hotel room there will be accommodations for those who need more accessibility. These accessible features will be seen throughout the communal spaces as well in the washrooms and some of the sleeping pods. The environment is also an important factor for this new capsule hotel and green design is increasing in popularity. The green decision will help make this capsule hotel stand out to travellers who are looking for green alternative stays.

THE GROOVE
PROJECT BY KAYLA DI STAULO
“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master” – Christian Lous Lange
Technology has become something most people rely on. My parents always talk about all the fun activities they did when they were in high school/elementary school when technology was not as big as it is now. But now, people prefer technology involved activities.
The Groove is a retro entertainment center located in Vancouver. The Groove is meant to mimic the past when people would go out and do fun activities, when electronics barely existed. Since retro is coming back, that will be the theme of the entertainment center. The space will have a mix of different activities that were popular between the 60s-90s and some that are popular now to cater to both older generations and younger ones. The Groove offers activities such as an arcade, board game café, a maze, and more. The purpose of The Groove is to unite generations and diminish any stereotypes, while also providing a fun place for people to socialize and encourage them to become less reliant on technology.

HEXFLEX LEARNING
PROJECT BY KAITLYN ROGERS
Introducing HexFlex Learning; a flexible learning solution. This building and modules are meant to replace the typical school building that we often see in our communities.
The main portion of the building, that houses the gymnasium, admin spaces, cafeteria, and other community workspaces is meant to be more of a permanent building for the community. The classrooms, or individual learning clusters, are semi-permanent, in the same fashion that portables are. They are built to be able to come apart and move around, either lessening the number of classrooms or adding them according to the influx of students.
Not only does this allow the school system to flex and grow with the surrounding community, but also ensures the students that would have been put into portables at a typical school are still connected to their school community. These classroom pods are designed to withstand the usual Canadian weather, have better accessibility than typical portables, and have more flexible interiors to conform and flex to the student's educational and physical needs while encouraging community and collaboration.

D.G. IVEY LIBRARY
PROJECT BY IRIS DIEP
When asked to create a magical library, we have come to the conclusion that something magical is an experience. Creating a memorable experience in a library is important because stereotypically, a library is perceived as boring. To create a magical library would be to make the library a fun space and make the users excited with anticipation for their next visit. To do so,the stereotypical library is used as a contrast to the fun and exciting areas that are created to make the library magical. One key element of the magical experience is to have the entrances of the exciting areas hidden in plain sight. This will all be located at the D. G. Ivey Library located near the University of Toronto to hopefully attract students and increase the library’s popularity, status, and change the image that is attached to a library.

PATHWAY
PROJECT BY HUNG HOANG
The concept of this project is based on the integration between synchronicity and the illumination of the light.
Synchronicity is a concept introduced by Carl G. Jung “to describe circumstances that appear meaningful related yet lack of causal connection.” In contemporary research, synchronicity experiences refer to a person's subjective experience that coincidences between events in their mind and the outside world may be causally unrelated to each other yet have some other unknown connection. Therefore, the goal of my project focuses on re-purpose a 3-story building into a multipurpose building for the youth to gather, meet new people, share ideas and more importantly overcome life challenges and find their life purposes. This project will feature restaurant space, bar space, hotel rooms and some public spaces for gatherings and ideas/problems displays.

.WELL. COMM UNITY CENTRE
PROJECT BY HEATHER GREER
Mental health issues and diagnoses are on the rise for university students and campus counselling and wellness services are unable to keep up with the increased demands. It is proposed that a centre allowing students to proactively improve their mental health would be beneficial in the long run, helping develop healthy coping habits while taking pressure off campus provided services. Secondary research through a literature review was conducted to ascertain features of a relaxing and comfortable environment and the activities most successful in relieving stress in 18 – 24 -year-olds – the primary age bracket of university students. Spaces with biophilic elements and limited colour and material palettes are most suitable for creating a calming environment. Activities found to help reduce stress include yoga, gardening, and art. Strong relationships with friends and family also play a role. The results suggest a soothing space where groups and individuals can destress with fun and enjoyable activities.
CONCEPT: To provide a space with the intent of positively and proactively addressing mental health concerns by providing programs known to reduce stress. University students are often overwhelmed and on campus support services can find themselves unable to address the needs of everyone who requires assistance. This centre aims to give students an opportunity to address and improve their wellbeing to relieve the load university services find themselves under.

HAPPY ESCAPE SPACES
PROJECT BY EVA KENYON
Spaces of Happiness- Are places that ultimately offer comfort, security, and the ability to do activities that bring joy. Happiness is a personal emotion and the ability to achieve that feeling is different for everyone.
Project Goal/Concept- Personal rooms are not a necessity. Since space is limited, only rooms like the kitchen, living room, bathrooms and bedrooms are considered mandatory spaces when purchasing a home. While those rooms can bring happiness, not everyone has a space specifically designed for what they like. A bedroom can be considered a personal space, however depending on the size sometimes all there is room for is a bed and storage for personal items, such as clothing. Happy Escape Spaces are custom prefabricated 108 square feet accessory dwellings with the goal of offering a separate space that is specifically designed for someone's hobbies or goals that offers a sense of comfort, escape, relaxation, and entertainment which ultimately results in one's happiness.

W.I.T.C.H.
PROJECT BY EMILY COOK
It’s often difficult to find places fit for working on creative projects that provide adequate space and facilities, while also providing a space that inspires creativity. W.I.T.C.H is a coworking studio space for local creatives. The acronym stands for work, inspire, teach, create, and host, which embodies everything the space has to offer. Located in Montreal, in a neighborhood on Laurier street East, the building is accessible to a variety of users. Any local creative with a membership may use the studio spaces to work on their projects. Whether it’s for their creative business or a hobby, W.I.T.C.H. has a variety of studio spaces for all types of creative work. There is a large exhibition space that can host art shows, fashion shows, pop up shops and many other events to display the members' work to the public. While the exhibition space would not be for everyday use, there is a retail shop on the main level of the building which is always accessible to the public. This shop provides a space for the members to sell their work.
The design of W.I.T.C.H. plays into magical qualities to create a space of inspiration. From the moody and colorful selection of finishes, to the high ceilings with curving hallways and staircases, the interior of this space ensures that every user is met with a magical experience upon entering the building.
