On todays Motivate Monday we’d like to take a moment to thank all the 2023 ViaYOUTH Summit Delegates for making this years summit so great. We couldn’t have done it without your participation, enthusiasm and courage to travel to Vancouver. Each year we get the chance to bring together a unique group of youth from all across the country. Each individual brings their own experiences, and life story, and shared that with our group. We become a special and unique community / eco system where we each get to learn from one another’s stories, lived experiences, opinions and perspectives. An important part of our events at Motivate Canada is the morning smudge, shared amongst our delegates, VYS Committee members, staff and our guests. This year we were honored to be joined by Elder Deborah Baker from the Vancouver/ Squamish Region of British Columbia. Each morning we gathered together in a circle outside of the RoundHouse Community Centre in the crisp ocean air and sunshine to begin our day. Many youth come to our events already with understanding of the smudge. But some youth, and guests have never taken part in this tradition before, and therefore it becomes a wonderful learning and teaching moment and exchange for the individuals participating. Thank you to our social impact coordinator and GEN7 lead Leland MacLeod @mikmacleod for leading us through the smudge each morning. We were also lucky to have alumni, and GEN7 collaborative lead Jarrett Whitefish lead us through the smudge as well. He shared with us sweet grass from the prairies in addition to the sage. The most beautiful view… a group of ‘strangers’ meeting for the first time and sharing moments of laughter 🤭 Our VYS committee member @kiaclem facilitated an activity last weekend with our summit delegates called “Laughter Yoga” - laugher yoga is “a popular movement and breathing exercise that aims to cultivate joy, bring out your inner child and encourage you to let go.” Because laughter is considered to be contagious this practice eventually got everyone in the room laughing whether they were actively participating in the activity or watching.
