Jacqueline Ethier is a dance artist, teacher, mother and business woman. See www.pilatesspace.com for more information on Jacqueline!
Our question to Jacqueline:
You are a Pilates teacher and studio owner. Congratulations on Pilates Space’s 20 year anniversary! How has your teaching career informed you as a performer?
“Working with a varied group of movers of all ages and abilities, I’d say my teaching reminds me daily of how grateful I am to be performing and expressing myself through dance in my 40s. My personal Pilates practice along with other modalities I’ve studied over the years have helped me stay conditioned and adaptable in an aging body. Acquired wisdom has also helped me to recognize my limits but to continue to expand my movement potential with a combination of strength and suppleness. My children have taught me to approach all this serious work with curiosity and joy! Gratitude, self-acceptance and living a life of balance are at the heart of it all for me and I strive to allow all of myself to be expressed in my dancing.”
Thank you Jacqueline for sharing about your approach to movement and for your beautiful dancing in “Empty Space⼁Empty Time!”

The Fletcher Pilates Comprehensive Program is under way. The three seven-day teacher training program sessions are run via zoom through headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. The first one was completed last week - a full 35 hours of movement and exploration. I'm delighted to be mentoring two students through the program. You'll be seeing more of Caitlin and Amanda in-studio practicing, observing and assisting in the coming months. As some of you know, I've been involved in this process for over 15 years now and I always find inspiration in reconnecting to all aspects of Ron's work and helping the next generations of teachers along the way.

Part 2! You were 29 years old when you were the proud recipient of the Ottawa Business Journal 40 under 40 award. Then Ottawa Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award, Woman of Distinction Award and the list goes on. You’re truly a remarkable woman Jacqueline! You’ve somehow balanced a career in business, pursued your career as a dance artist and mothered two pretty exceptional humans along the way.
At first, I was your rock and sounding board. There were many expansions and renovations and moves and it was all worth it. I’m glad that we eventually joined forces and settled into our current location. I was hesitant to move out of the downtown core but you were so confident and happy that it was contagious. The timing was a bit stressful. You were pregnant with our second child and gave birth at home just a few weeks after the move. Yikes! With an energetic toddler and a newborn, you kept our team motivated and let them rise up during your leave. That’s another thing about you, you bring out the best in people. I love our little Pilates Space, I love the location, I love all our staff and I love all of our clients. What an amazing place!!! And, oh yah and PS…I love you!
Speaking of which, when COVID-19 initially hit and Pilates Space was forced to close, I always knew that while you were behind the wheel, we were going to be OK. Our “PS I love you” campaign was a huge success. The community came together and got us through the toughest time to be in business. Although we have a few bruises, we came out standing tall and proud, on our new floor! Almost 9 years after wanting to change that dang carpet, it finally got done.
Happy 45 Birthday Jacqueline! Happy 20th Anniversary Pilates Space and cheers to at least another 20 Years of PS! Charlie ❤️
A message from Charlie…Part 1! Dearest and loveliest Jacqueline. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
You’ve spent a lot of time and energy writing thoughtful birthday wishes for all the Pilates Space staff even when times were rough and your time was scarce. Now it’s your turn for a birthday wish.
One thing I picked up on, from the moment we met, is that you know what you want and that you’re not afraid to ask for it and excitedly work towards getting it. You scored me 😉 didn’t you, haha, heehee… Even though we had perfectly fine ice cream at home, you wanted a Dairy Queen Peanut Buster Parfait with Pecans instead of peanuts and nothing else mattered. Do you remember the time when we actually ate ice cream?
I remember the time in 2001 when you told me that you were getting a loan from The Caisse Populaire to buy Pilates equipment and you were going to rent space. I believe that a bank had already declined to lend you money. I wasn’t sure that this was a good choice since I, nor most of Ottawa, hadn’t heard about Pilates yet. You did it, and fast forward, you’ve built a solid business that not only supports our family but has improved the lives of everyone who has crossed your path. You wanted to have a space, a Pilates Space, where everyone was welcome and you would not tolerate any B.S. You’ve done that for 20 years!
You searched for years to find the missing answers in your Pilates practice and after numerous trips to Tucson Arizona you found it in Fletcher Pilates. You have since expanded your teaching knowledge with the MELT method, Z Health, FRC, Fighting Monkey and so much more, just so you can offer our clients the best movement experience. You know so much but you keep wanting more.
PS check the next post for Part 2!
I was first introduced to Yoga Nidra by Guy Cools at Ottawa Dance Directive. If you'd like to explore rest, recovery and insight, I highly recommend you join. The timing is serendipitous.
Yoga Nidra is a form of meditation - a unique combination of deep relaxation and alert awareness - that rejuvenates and renews both the physical body and the mind.

The Cadillac was partly disassembled, moved, moved again then reassembled in its very own nook where it been getting lots of action with our one-on-one sessions. Welcome back Cadillac!
We were busy this January, moving all the equipment into our ‘zoom room’ to replace the carpet in the rest of the studio.
