Kan Azuma conceptualized his Other Land series during a short visit to a sand quarry on the north side of Toronto, while working as a darkroom technician at York University. 📷

In this series, he combined the shots he took at Peggy’s Cove in Nova Scotia, with those of a desert-like barren landscape captured at the Toronto construction site.

This prompted him to contemplate the geological time required to break rocks down into sand through weathering and eroding. ⌛

🐢 Ahead of tomorrow, spend time with Prudence Heward's The Farmer's Daughter, to observe her painting technique and painterly choices.

Heward was known and praised for her ability to harmonize figure and landscape. ⛰️ With her lipstick and painted nails, and the dark blue pools of her eyes, this farmer’s daughter seems to have sprung like a cultivated crop – or some wild, native species – from the land.

📖 Discover more about this work with Anita Lahey in the NGC Magazine: https://www.gallery.ca/magazine/your-collection/prudence-heward-strength-of-spirit

The photographs from the series 88 Shrines Pilgrimage by Kan Azuma, feature the people he met during his trip to Shikoku Island, one of Japan’s four major islands, in the mid-1980s.

The local folklore of the island says that, if you visit all 88 temples with diligence, your deceased family members may come and see you.

Azuma photographed pilgrims and workers at these temples on the pilgrimage route, in the hope of seeing his late mother’s face. 📷

Get a glimpse at Kan Azuma's Erosion series 👇

“The photos (for Erosion) weren’t meant to be viewed individually. Instead, I wanted viewers to feel the anxiety I had back then through the entire sequence.

I intended to create a rhyme-like rhythm, as in a poem, through the sequence of photos, so I purposely included weak images that must have confused the viewer (…).

Individually, none of the photos in the Erosion series are poems. But together they become one.” —Kan Azuma

Last week, you may have noticed artist Thierry Delva at the Gallery, who sat for extended periods of time in front of works with a machine next to him.

Delva's performance in the Gallery's permanent collection is titled Drawings from the Heart: National Gallery of Canada (2024), where he creates a series of conceptual drawings produced by “deep looking” at artworks while he monitors his heart with a portable electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. 📈

Many were very curious about Delva's work and stopped by for a closer look. 👁️

In the newly acquired work by Mona Hatoum, Balançoires, the artist borrows the familiar form of the swing.

Her seats are glass, however, unable to accommodate anyone. They are engraved with a split map of Beirut—where she was born, underscoring the fragility of the city's often precarious sociopolitical situation.

Sheila Heti on Mary Pratt's Red Currant Jelly 03/15/2024

Happy birthday, Mary Pratt! 🎈

Novelist Sheila Heti invites you to discover this acclaimed East Coast painter's work, Red Currant Jelly, from our collection: https://youtu.be/wbN-UvWwyxQ?list=PLK8qVR6emhGDykvSPiXGQblkbvLIDmy6f

In her work of the 1970s, Pratt (1935–2018) addressed the everyday objects of women's domestic lives. By depicting them close-up and in detail, she suggested larger symbolic meaning, as well as a sense of absurdity.

Red Currant Jelly is characteristic of Pratt's elevation of banal domestic activities to the state of ritual.
