HEIRLOOMS: an excerpt exhibition by ERIN ROBERTSON & STEPHANIE HILL
Meet the artists this Thursday, Aug 15, from 5 - 7 pm.

This exhibition holds personal historical resonance for both artists but the range of mood they strike speaks to us all. Precious small sculptures, quirky character-filled portraits and fine depictions of enigmatic situations fill the gallery. Erin has created new works and new forms in clay, oil and bronze. Stephanie's works are in ink, watercolour and gouache on paper.

In the gallery now.

"Artifact" by Anna Williams is composed of cast bronze panels of the wood blocks she carved for printmaking. The immortalized images (look past the layer of patina!) reimagine classical myths from an intersectional feminist vantage point.

"Throughout history, bronze has been viewed as a masculine, technically challenging, and highly valued expression of status and power. It was thus used for significant civic monuments. By leveraging the authenticity of the museum as well as the connotative meaning of bronze to tell an intimate tale of female identity, Artifact brings together what was viewed as inferior, base, and Other, and monumentalizes it as valued and immutable."

Artifact III (Daphne and Apollo) and Artifact I (Callisto and Arcas) are at L. A. Pai.
They are 1/1 edition bronzes measuring 16” x 22” x 0.25”. Related relief prints from this series are also available.

Contrasting textures of different materials, shapes, and surface treatments are combined to an exciting effect in these jewellery pieces by Vancouver-based jewellery designer and metalsmith Sherri Pelican.

Among the textural elements here, you will see sterling silver (oxidized, etched), stones (including malachite, rutilated quartz, onyx, and white jade), crushed glass and stone, and monoprints that have been laminated and riveted into place.

Cloisonné enamel jewellery pieces by Gayane Avetisyan are small symphonies of colour composed into intricate one-of-a-kind designs.

"The process of enamelling, whether laying down the cloisonné wires or waiting in front of the kiln, allows me to meditate and connect with a certain alchemic magic. I strive to achieve a finish that allows my colours, shades and foil to play with the light, and provide a tactile feel that is unique to this form of jewellery."

Ollie's one of a kind pencil bowls are robust, even functional artworks, made from coloured pencils and resin on a lathe. The pencils have been colour coordinated to make unique. Inspired by his love for abstract and surreal art, Ollie enjoys playing with the composition of colours within his creations and follows the desire to create a structure with a texture that you can hold in your hands.
