Plosive is holding auditions for the first of its two shows in the 2024-25 season, NEVER SWIM ALONE by Daniel MacIvor. (Stay tuned for auditions in the fall for the second show, Alan Ayckbourn’s PRIVATE FEARS IN PUBLIC SPACES, taking place June 2025.)
Auditions are being held for the role of BILL. The roles of FRANK and the REFEREE have been cast. Auditions are open to union and non-union artists age 18 or over. Engagement will be under the Artists’ Collective Policy with remuneration by profit share.
Rehearsals will be part time on a schedule to be determined based on what best suits the collective including the successful candidate's availability. The production will take place at Ottawa's The Gladstone Theatre with performances October 16-26, 2024.
Plosive is committed to Ottawa based artists. Applicants should have strong ties to Ottawa and be able to participate as local Ottawa-based artists, with no travel or accommodation allowance.
Candidates who are unavailable for in-person auditions are encouraged to still submit, and may be invited to audition by self-tape or alternate means.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
BILL – A prototypical “alpha male”: suit-wearing mid-career financier and father of a four-year-old. At best affable, gregarious and charming; at worse ruthlessly competitive, manipulative and utterly lacking in empathy. Displays verbal virtuosity through a series of quick bouts as he competes with FRANK to prove which one is “the first man” (and reveal which man has the gun). The actor playing BILL could be any gender so long as they can portray the character with conviction.

Thank you so much Apt613!
Friends, family, community, sorrow, and a lot of laughter—that would probably be the best way to describe director Gabriella Gadsby’s take on the classic and heartwarming tale, Steel Magnolias. This iconic story will be performed at The Gladstone Theatre 🎭 from Feb. 29–March 9, and Apt613 has all the details.
We sat down with Gadsby to hear more about her vision for this piece and how her real-life experiences with the women in her life inspired this performance.
Steel Magnolias tells the real-life story of original author Robert Harling’s sister and a group of tight-knit enigmatic women from the Louisiana South. Set in the 1980s, Gadsby says it was crucial to get the style of the setting just right.
You can read our whole interview we had with Gabriella, and learn about the production in our blog.

Our Story
Three Sisters Theatre Company sprang from the observation that few productions in the Ottawa theatre community were passing the Bechdel test. Our first production was Birth: A Play by Karen Brody, which ran in August 2009 with a cast of 8 local female actors. We are now a resident company at The Gladstone Theatre, since our February 2015 production of Marion Bridge.
Three Sisters’ mandate is to increase performance opportunities for Ottawa’s considerable female talent pool - and especially to increase opportunities for women to work together - bringing more theatrical stories featuring complex female characters to the Ottawa professional theatre scene.
What is the Bechdel test?
What is now known as the Bechdel test was introduced in a comic strip by Alison Bechdel. To pass the test, the story must meet three requirements:
1. It has to have at least two women in it,
2. who talk to each other,
3. about something besides a man.
