Our Story

Fresh. Local. Hearty. The Social opened in April of 2014. Immediately recognized for their fresh, local and humble approach to pub and bistro classics, The Social has managed to establish itself as a mainstay in downtown Port Hope.

The Social has been recognized in multiple fashions including a designation through the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance’s FeastON program. This is a designation held for those who dedicate their business to procuring local food in an effort to help bolster the local economy. As a result of our commitment to local food, The Social was invited to be a vendor at the 2014 Premier’s Agri-Food Summit at Queen’s Park. Following our one-year anniversary, we received the Port Hope Chamber Of Commerce award for excellence in new business. We have also received our Feast ON redesignation in 2016.

Our commitment to local economic development is evident through partnerships with local growers and producers such as Osland Farms, Linwood Acres Trout Farm, Headwaters Farm, Empire Cheese Co-Op and Church-key Brewery. What is less obvious is the financial impact we make every day. A Ryerson study shows that local food has a 3:1 impact on the local economy and Ontario wine over 12:1. With a commitment to Ontario products we are, with a 25 seat restaurant, making an impact on our local economy equivalent to, or better than, a chain restaurant with well over 150 seats and no commitment to local food. Like a mantra, The Social says when it comes to local food if they can, they will.
