Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Julia I am a professional Land Use Planner. What I love about my job is that it’s different almost every day! I answer questions from the public about subdivisions or building a tiny home; or I spend time collaborate with other levels of government for regional projects like parks & trails planning. In my spare time, I play ice hockey! I’ve been playing since I was 12, and the first thing I looked up after being offered a job was if I could join a local hockey team – Go Ice Cats!

Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Heather I work as a casual receptionist. I love learning how the qRD works to keep the community running smoothly. With growth comes change, and the qRD is constantly looking for ways to help integrate new changes into a functional society for the benefit of us all. It's fascinating to watch.

Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Sherry I am a third generation Powell Riverite, born and raised. After working in the local banking industry for 37 years, I started as a casual receptionist/clerk in July 2019 and have moved into a temporary full-time role as the Records Management Clerk. I love organizing conferences, seminars and travel for staff and directors and preparing for and attending committee and board meetings which are very informative. I am currently taking a course on the records management aspect of my position and learning a great deal about the management of digital and paper records through the steps from creation, receipt, maintenance, storage and destruction. At the qRD, we are a well oiled team! Everyone is so approachable and willing to assist each other and the public.

Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Al I am the Chief Administrative Officer and the single employee to the Board of Directors. I guide, mentor and coach the managers who operationally fulfill the directives and desires of the Board. Working for the qRD is a fantastic experience, when you see the fruits of our work that enables the public in some way, it gives me a sense of pride and satisfaction.

Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Caroline I assist the Manager of Operational Services with the administrative side of the Operations department. “You can find me tracking contracts and leases, and coding equipment usage. Three specific public-facing activities I coordinate are the Special Event Permit process, the new Parks, Properties & Trails Volunteer Program, and cemetery administration. As challenging as it can sometimes be, my Cemetery Administrator duties are the most fulfilling part of my day. I help people through the process of reserving resting places and arranging for the burial of their loved ones in one of our two cemeteries. It’s fascinating to see the decision-making process from behind the scenes at the qRD, and what goes into providing all these services to the public. I’m amazed at how much we do with so few people! I’ve also found it helps my personal understanding of what is happening at other levels of government, beyond what we see on the news.

Local Government Awareness Week, Staff Profile: Esme I started at the qathet Regional District (qRD) in August of 2020 on Reception. Since then, I have had the opportunity to gain experience in Asset Management, Records Management and I now work in the Administration department as the Assistant Manager of Administrative Services. We have an amazing team that works collaboratively together every day. I really enjoy being a part of our Committee and Board meetings and seeing the process of things from start to finish.
