The Absolution Project
Absolution is the formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment. "absolution from the sentence".
The Absolution Project aims to give low/no cost consultations for pardon and record suspensions.
Out of interest I messaged a company on Facebook to see what the price would be for a record suspension.
First off, this is a cheaper option than some companies offer. I have seen the prices 1400$+. Second, this is only part of the cost. The application fee is 50$ the fingerprinting and local police record check cost 30$+.
This is why I have initiated the summer clinic for record suspensions. It shouldn’t cost thousands for something someone has already earned.
For those who are not clear on the waiting time when applying for a pardon/record suspension, there are old, as well as new rules that determine waiting periods.
The new version is known as a record suspension.
After March 13th, 2012, Record Suspension
• 10 years – an offence prosecuted by indictment.
• 5 years – an offence that is punishable on summary conviction.
The old version is known as a pardon.
Before June 29th, 2010, Pardon
• 5 years – an offence prosecuted by indictment.
• 3 years – an offence punishable on summary conviction.
For offences between those two versions is a different timeline that determines eligibility.
The whole system is super confusing, and this is just the waiting period we are talking about.
If you are unsure where you stand, send us a message, and we can help.
The Absolution Project does not consult for profit.
Now it seems more as though the Canadian Government also is not trying to profit from forgiveness.
The fee to apply (once your application is complete) for a record suspension or pardon used to be $657.77
As of January 1, 2022, the cost to APPLY for a record suspension is $50.00
Did you know there are doctors, politicians, and even lawyers with a criminal record? it is typically something in their past that people hide and hope that it doesn't come up when applying for work, volunteer opportunities, or travel. People make mistakes. I'm not talking about unforgivable crimes such as murder or r**e. I am talking about things like mischief, assault, or improper storage of legal fi****ms. The Absolution Project aims to assist those people so they may clear their criminal records and achieve the freedom they have earned.
I am a criminology student at TRU. I have decided to run a summer consultation day every Friday to help manage the tangled mess of the Canadian record suspension program. Absolution is the formal release of guilt and punishment. There are millions of Canadians with criminal records. Many who will never offend again. The stigmatization and continued punishment of a criminal record are ineffective at preventing re-offending. Furthermore, I find it astonishing, and rather criminal itself, that there are companies that are allowed to charge hundreds, if not thousands, to consult on the process of obtaining a record suspension. The Absolution Project will offer free consulting, and only a small printing fee if necessary. Please message here or email [email protected] for more information. Feel free to pass on the information to family and friends.
