UNBC Sustainability
UNBC is Canada's Green University. By integrating our teaching, research, operations and community outreach, our goal is to be a leader in sustainability.
Gleaning in a (clean & green) style with the UNBC Ford Lightning electric truck on Sunday ! We went to 5 houses and picked up 87 kgs of apples that will be made into wine/cider or given to pigs to eat, saving bears from being killed while feeding people!
Have a tree to be picked or want to volunteer to pick fruit up until the Fall Fruit Fest/join our workshops (Sept 6 - Sept 8 ) (Recycling & Environmental Action Planning Society)?

Notice a drop in garbage bins around campus? We're expanding our recycling to include flexible plastics and launching compost collection in September! ๐โป๏ธ To support this, we're repurposing some bins into office recycling containers. There will still be garbage bins, just fewer of them. Need a compost or recycling bin for your department? Let us know and we'll get you set up!

Monday, August 19th, show your support for the PG Urban Farmscape | 5 Acres society as they present to city council! 6pm at City Hall.
Find the agenda and all details (including their presentation) submitted to council.
In the words of the PG Urban Farmscape society
"When we collectively as a united community want something, we have to make that visible to our City Council. So, if like us, you believe an Urban Farm close to downtown to grow and teach how to grow would significantly improve our local food security and food sovereignty, please, join us on Monday at City Hall or write your council."

On July 12 - 14, several faculty from UNBC made the trek to Dawson Creek (402 km) with their EVs for the Mile Zero Cruiser event with . As far as I know they all made it back alive and well :) and they saved 4x the fuel costs (e.g. an EV Kona uses 3c/km while a ICE Kona uses 12 c/km) while doing so!
Have a car on its last wheels and interested in getting an EV? Come to the next Energy Transition group/PGEVA meeting on August 13 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm to try them out/ask an Owner!
Thanks to everyone who donated (or returned :P) their mugs to us for the Borrow a Mug program! We had a fun arts and crafts day labelling them and creating items for the display case. If you have any more lying around please feel free to drop them off at the Sustainability Office 7-232. Have a great long weekend!
Last Saturday, the Group Bike Ride with Kyle Ross from PGSafeBiking went through the beautiful Heritage Trail and noted several improvements needed for :
- Crossing from the highway to the Cameron St. entrance to the trail was quite risky because of the curved road; a convex mirror there would help.
- The bridge linking the main path to Carrie Jane Grey Park and the Y has been damaged and unrepaired for years, forcing cyclists and pedestrians to travel an extra 500 m to reach their destination rather than a few metres
To support better bike infrastructure for safer roads, pedestrians, and drivers, sign the petition and join us for the next ride:

We wrapped up stenciling the T-shirts we got from the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop for the UNBC G-force (Green Force)!
By choosing 21 pre-loved shirts over new ones, weโve made a HUGE impact by:
๐ง Saving 56,700 litres of water (Thatโs like 52.5 years of drinking water for one person!
๐ Reducing 147 kg CO2 equivalent (Thatโs the same as driving 630 km in a car or from Prince George to Kelowna! ๐)
Not to mention all the money we saved and the fun we had!
Join the G-force and may the force be with you: https://forms.office.com/r/fwmPBr709r
Feel like youโve got the force within you? Join the Green Force (G-Force) and unleash your green energy! Your superpower? Turn gross into growth, trash into treasure, and shift to thrift (like what we did with the G-Force shirts) for a better future! Anyone in the UNBC Community (Faculty, Staff, students) can join.
