Work on confidence
Don't only work teaching the horse one new maneuver each time. Work on building confidence. Horses learn through repetition so just because the horse can do the maneuver does not mean he/she is confident in it. Present it at different times, from different places in the arena or from different gaits to build confidence.
We will be running a trial of a new program this September.
Wee Riders is a program designed to give children aged 5-8 years old the opportunity to experience horseback riding in a fun-filled program. The program is designed to promote safety around horses, a base of understanding and the ability to practice the skills learned.
The program will be offered in 3 levels. And our first trial will be Level 1 which we will be potentially be holding in town rather than at the farm over 6 sessions. At this stage, we are planning for Tuesday evenings 6pm however we are still confirming the location. Rate for this program is $120 per 6 sessions ($20 per session)
The program includes fun group sessions using barrels, gym mats and a variety of other tools to teach up and coming riders the basics of riding. The program at this time does not get specific into English or Western so children who are interested in either are welcome.
If this program sounds interesting for your child and you would like to participate in this trial run. Please fill out the following form to receive additional information:

Chip is a super chill guy. He is is a 3 year old gelding currently standing 14.2 hands and is very well put together. He should mature 15 hands and stout. APHA registered and sired by HighCountry Medicine, the Anderson’s stud and out of Super Tux Deluxe. We have owned him since weanling and we are super proud of how he has turned out. He has lovely smooth gaits, a relaxed manner about him and he’s naturally leaded. Currently going walk, jog, lope. He has been working over poles and other trail obstacles. Will make an nice all-rounder as he is careful and not in much of a hurry to go anywhere. Would love to see him go to a show home.

🤠Training Tip Tuesday🤠
It's not just the timing of your aids that matter, its the timing of when your training session is done. Choose a time in the ride/training session where the horse is responsive, has seen some improvement and they are still willing, that way they will enjoy the next training session.
Spirit is currently going a solid walk, jog, lope. He can turn on the haunches, turn on the forehand, back and side-pass. He still needs refinement but has become a very solid horse.

😉Training Tip Tuesday😉
Horses under stand patterns - create good patterns with your horse. Every aid to get the horse to do something is a pattern. As an example - if you want to improve your stop make sure you use the pattern 1. Whoa 2. Start drawing up on your reins (slowly) 3. Back up.
Do that a few times and soon your horse will start stopping when you say Whoa thinking the next thing you will do is draw up the reins.
When you go up to ride today - create a good pattern.
Horsemanship Clinic was a great time this past Saturday!
It brought up the conversation of what does "horsemanship" mean to you? After some discussion - we came to the conclusion that it might mean something a little bit different to everyone depending on where you were in your horse journey. How to communicate with the horse (both talk and listen),and how to be in the right head space to work with your horse were both very common topics upon participants.
So I ask FB peeps, what does "horsemanship" mean to you?

♥️The reason why we do this. ♥️
Janel who now owns Cherry for those who remember her sent us an update! Cherry has been a great mount for her. Cherry has been chasing cows, doing gymkhanas and even rode in the Williams Lake Stampede parade.
Its absolutely heart-warming to hear these stories about horses who have been in our program. Horses training can be a day in and day out grind sometimes but knowing our work has given someone a steady and competent mount makes it all worth it.
We are excited to see what is in store for this pair in the future.
Be thank you to Janel for the update and to Mira for her part in developing Cherry.
Navicular disease...
Everyone seems to run when I say navicular. Here, we have probably 4 out of 9 of our lesson horses with navicular and they are all sound happy horses with front shoes. When the disease is caught early and treatment is initiated which usually includes hospital type shoes or bar type shoes and pads to start and possibly some pain medication to manage as the hoof gets the correct support you are able to start scaling back the shoeing by removing pads, or transitioning to regular shoes instead of bar shoes. The whole process takes about year.
20 years ago - navicular was a death sentence for a horse but the horse industry has come leaps and bounds in that time. We know so much more now than we did then. And navicular is a treatable condition... horses can go on and live great lives with their owners...it is a very manageable issue. Does it take time? Yes and corrective shoeing and working with a vet. It takes all of those things when diagnosed. But once treated - the treatment is usually a pair of front shoes.
So what really is navicular?
Navicular syndrome is a chronic degenerative condition that can cause lameness in the front legs. It is most commonly seen in competition horses and quarter horses. It may be caused by repetitive mechanical stress on the navicular bone, resulting in degeneration of tissues and ligaments in the heel.
Horses with navicular syndrome may have a shortened stride length, exhibit signs of pain or experience changes in their gait such as toe landing. Tightness in the proper hoof care and maintaining a good body condition for senior horses can help to reduce the risk of this condition. Mad Barn
Point of this post? Think outside the box. You will not get a super broke horse for $5000 that's safe without some issues. Diagnosed navicular is a safe option you know what you are getting, that horse had someone who cared enough about him/her to diagnose the problem and who spent the time to treat it.
There isn't much this gelding can't do. Standing at 14.3, this super broke gelding has it all. Stops like a dream, spins, easy changes, and he's cute as a button.
He loads and travels easily. Enzo is great for the farrier, stalls well, and can live in a herd. He's a 2015 gelding who has AQHA papers, and his APHA papers are on their way. Sired by HF Mobster and out of Just Like A Jerry. Enzo has years of professional training in reining and has recently been working on General Performance.
He has been used with riders as small as 6 who have never ridden, teenagers in lessons, adults and open riders and done super. He is not spooky at all and knows his job. He has started attending Ranch Riding shows and has been a superstar with many top 3 placings. Super easy-going gelding.

🇨🇦Happy Canada Day, everyone!🇨🇦
Today, we are offering Miss Day (HT Daisy Duke) for sale. Daisy is an Amber Champagne tobiano APHA registered two-year-old who is a homegrown baby. She is by WK Skips the Blue (Perlino Tobiano) and Four Jets Sasha WVR (Chestnut). We are offering Daisy as broodmare sound currently.
Unfortunately, she had an accident as a yearling from slipping on the ice, which has torn a ligament in her stifle, and the vet has recommended 2 years of pasture rest. But we need the space to bring in other horses, so we are offering her for 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ for a quick, uncomplicated sale. She lunges, leads, ties, and hauls very well. She has been well handled, which is why we are very sad to see her go. Message the page for additional questions.
We do not have any video of her.

Considering we have been in business for 20 years this year, we have seen many riders learn to ride and improve year after year, while many other riders get to a single point and stagnate, never getting any better.
You are probably wondering what the difference is. We can tell you it's not the ability of the horse, and it's not money spent on a better horse. It's the rider's try! We always hear talk about horses that have try. A horse that comes to work every day with an open mind and a willingness to step outside the previous training and try something new. When riders have preconceived notions about 'well that has worked for me' before but are unwilling to try something new to see if the new way of doing it might work even better, the rider gets stagnate and thus will stay at that level until their mindset changes.
To be a great rider, you must always be learning and open to learning. Always meaning every day, every interaction with your horse, and even when you are not at the barn. When you are not improving anymore - be a horse with try - come to work every day willing to try something new.
HT Caramel Candy (AQHA Pending) is a 3 year old started mare who is athletic but quiet. Candy is super willing to please and wants to be someone's only horse. Hence the sale. A plan jane looking horse but the exact opposite in personality. She is correct in every way. She was originally meant to be Alicia's horse that's why she is behind but would really like an owner of her own. Currently going walk/trot about to start loping.

Super excited to have completed our last show for the month of June. It was great to be able to just scoot on down to the The Prince George Horse Society for a few ranch classes. Enzo and Alicia had a few bobbles yesterday in the pen but it was an excellent schooling opportunity and as someone I admire once said, "That is horses" .
A big thank you to the Northern BC Reining group for hosting a well run show.
Looking forward to the next one but until them some getting some rest at home.
Most of us horse lovers have been inspired by horses and riders in the movies at one point or another. Whether it was growing up watching John Wayne, or the Black Stallion those horses and the people who rode them made a big impact on us and deepened our interest in becoming a rider, learning about horses, or owning our own horse someday.
Here at Hylee, quite a few riders who come in having been riding for some time but have no formal training. With that comes a lot of misconceptions about horses and about riding. The one thing we end up focusing on in the first couple of lessons is direct rein usage, as opposed to riding one-handed.
And this just comes back to basics; in order to understand the horse, we must understand the basics. How does the indirect rein in front of the wither affect the horse? How do we pull with lightness? How do we half-halt? How do we give at the right time? Which means the majority of our riders start two-handed. And then once they have mastered riding two-handed, we can work on riding one-handed, which at that stage comes very easily.
Don't get me wrong; I'm super glad they are here to add to their “horse knowledge”I'm just curious where those ideas come from.

He will remain in training until sold. Would love to see him go to a show home.

The team is home from Rodeo PG weekend. And what a fun filled weekend it was! Great to see new and old friends as well as learning about new disciplines within our equestrian sport is always educational.
Enzo was the judge’s horse for the timed events and he was a super star for Wayne who rode him all weekend. And we are super happy how he did considering he had never been to the rodeo. He (Enzo not Wayne) handled all the nice, cheering and all the different stock like a pro! There is nothing this horse can’t do.
As always its fun to watch the brave and talented pick-up men - Owen and Chona and their very large and powerful steeds. It was nice to see the Sorken Rodeo horses buck and the brave and nimble bull fighters do their thing.
