May is Vision Health Month. ๐ง๐ค๐ถ๐
I want to share this poster even though it's a bit dated. The message is delivered beautifully and I draw strength from seeing the logo on the bottom right corner. My father in law, Kurt Flett, was commissioned to paint the previous logo for the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association. Years ago, I was looking for diabetes education materials and I came across this poster and immediately noticed Kurt's signature red sun. For me, the logo reaffirms my purpose on my journey as a Certified Diabetes Educator and Indigenous Pharmacist. Kurt passed away in May 2011 from complications of diabetes. http://web49.radiant.net/~nada1/aboutus/about_logo.php

How diabetes affects the eyes.
๐ Too much sugar in your blood can damage the blood vessels in the part of the eye called the retina. The retina is the tissue lining the back of the eye. High sugar levels cause the blood vessels to swell and leak into the retina and cause blurred vision or blind spots. If left untreated, new blood vessels may grow and cause further damage to your vision.
Regular eye exams are important.
๐ All people with diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy. It develops over time and often goes unnoticed until vision loss occurs.
To prevent vision loss or to keep it from getting worse.
๐ฅ Keep your blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol within a healthy range.

๐ Get your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
๐If you have diabetic retinopathy, very effective treatments are available.
Beneficiaries with a valid Saskatchewan Health Card who have been diagnosed with diabetes type 1 or 2 are eligible for an insured yearly diabetic eye exam by an optometrist. First Nations and Inuit covered by Indigenous Services Canada's Non-Insured Health Benefits are eligible for yearly eye exams as well.
Sending many blessings for clear vision๐ฆ๐๐ฝ

Allyship and the Role of Pharmacists in Supporting Indigenous Peoples and Communities Through allyship, self-reflection, inclusive and diverse educational opportunities, and community-based collaboration, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can contribute to the path to reconciliation.
National Indigenous History month is extra special for me this year. In June, the Canadian Pharmacists Association announced a new association I am honoured to be a part of. The Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada (IPPC) is a new Indigenous-led association aimed at connecting and supporting Indigenous pharmacy professionals and ensuring that pharmacy practice across the country reflects the principles and commitments of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
I am a Metis-Saulteaux woman who practices as a pharmacist where I was born and raised on Treaty 4 territory in Regina, Saskatchewan. I am grateful to have a voice and privileged to be involved in the care of so many who often do not have one. I work part time in a community pharmacy dispensary where I am the "keeper of the medicine chest". I am passionate about removing barriers and improving access to health care. I work to my full scope of practice as an injection certified, prescribing pharmacist to ensure every person receives timely, culturally safe, affirming care that is anti-racist and anti-oppressive. I am blessed to work in environments with, open minded, compassionate colleagues and young people who welcome an indigenous perspective and provide allyship.
I am so happy to have finally found Amy, Jaris + others. Let's do dis!

Healthy eating, myo-inositol supplementation and probiotic treatment are 3 interventions shown to lower the risk of developing diabetes in pregnancy. Food categories that contain the highest amount of inositols are fruits, beans, corn and nuts.
I really enjoyed this movie about a woman with Type 2 diabetes who decides to run a marathon. It was funny and heartwarming. A story about honouring yourself, the people you love and all of Mother Nature's gifts.
