It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Founder’s Mother, Margarete Bastian. On Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the age of 91 years, Margarete passed away peacefully in Regina.

Margarete is survived by her son James Bastian and his wife PL Bastian, grandson Ryan Bastian, his wife Kerry Bastian and their children Annika, Jack & Oliver Bastian; Jonathan Bastian and his wife Taryn Bastian and their children Rya and James Jr; Ariel Bastian and her husband Matt McKellar and their daughter Clara; and Jeremy Bastian and his partner Shannon Miele.

Margarete is survived by her daughter Tanya Potyondi and her husband Curtis Potyondi, their son Joshua Potyondi and his partner Carly Sullivan, and Matthew Potyondi and his fiancée Annemarie Schiemann, and countless friends.

Margarete immigrated to Canada with her mother, Lena Mueller. Although this was to be a short visit, she met Karl Bastian, fell in love, and they were married in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They had a son James in 1955 and after moving to Prince Albert their daughter Tanya was born in 1966.

Margarete volunteered her time for the YWCA, and the German Club in Regina where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She enjoyed meeting new people in the Newcomers Club of Regina. Margarete enjoyed learning and attended University classes well into her senior years. A love of travel lead her to many countries, travelling abroad as soon as she had two nickels to rub together.

Perhaps Margarete’s greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. She was known for her never-ending positivity and cheerful disposition, causing all of us to love her deeply.

One of Marg’s favourite spots was around the kitchen table, discussing the week’s events and checking in on her grandkids.

A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Anglican Church on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.
