Helpful Hints When Walking on Snow or Ice | Environmental Health and Safety | Iowa State University 17/01/2020

We hope you are staying warm in this cold weather! Here is a link to a website from Iowa State University that gives some tips for walking safely on snow and ice. Although their weather isn't as cold as ours they still have some great tips to remember! Here are their main points:

1) Take short steps or shuffle for stability
2) Bend slightly forward and walk flat-footed with your center of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible.
3) Keep your hands out of your pockets.
4) Be prepared to fall. If you fall, fall with sequential contacts at your thigh, hip, and shoulder. Avoid using outstretched arms to brace yourself. Bend your back and head forward to avoid hitting your head against the ground.

Stay warm and safe out there!

💥PT vs Scope for Meniscus Tear 💥⠀⠀⠀⠀
By 👏🏻 Effect of Early Surgery vs Physical Therapy on Knee Function Among Patients With Non-obstructive Meniscal Tears: The ESCAPE Randomized Clinical Trial. van de Graaf VA et al JAMA Oct. 2018⠀⠀⠀⠀
Among patients with non-obstructive meniscal tears, PT was equal to arthroscopy for improving patient-reported knee function over a 24-month follow-up⠀⠀
period. ⠀⠀⠀⠀
They went on to say that "Based on these results, PT may be considered an alternative to surgery for patients with non-obstructive meniscal tears."⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, basically if there's no bucket handle tear present that may be blocking joint range of motion, then it is highly encouraged that the patient and not do surgery.⠀⠀⠀⠀
Without going out on a limb, I'd say this is a much more cheaper treatment option as well and would save society many costs associated with the surgery and lost time from work.⠀⠀⠀⠀
I do note a couple limitations: the surgical group did not get PT after surgery if they did 'as expected' but they could get PT to help improve their symptoms.⠀⠀⠀⠀
The PT group did pretty basic exercises although leg press, lunges and balance type exercises were included.⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you read this paper? It was a multi-center, randomized controlled trial performed in 9 hospitals in the Netherlands.⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, are we encouraged or surprised? Let me know by commenting below...thanks!⠀⠀⠀⠀

Physiotherapy should be first-line treatment for hip and knee OA, not surgery 17/12/2018

A couple key points include:

➡️Physiotherapy with the focus of strengthening the muscles that support the affected joints combined with weight loss strategies have significant impacts on decreasing pain, enhancing function and improving quality of life for individuals with hip and knee OA.

If your knee hurts, keep exercising, says expert 04/06/2018

The article below discusses an important question we hear every day at our clinic.
"Am I allowed to exercise even though I have pain?"

New evidence arising shows that exercise can be very beneficial in reducing pain, as long as it programmed slowly.

The main rules of keeping active while experiencing pain are:
1️⃣️ On a scale of 10; try not to let an activity bother you any more then 2 levels above your baseline level of pain.

2️⃣️ Your pain should return to baseline (the usual level of your pain) the day after exercise.

This advice does not apply to all injuries and if you need specific help with developing an appropriate strategy to manage your pain, physiotherapy can help.
