As a general rule, your homeowners policy automatically extends coverage to family members living with you, such as your spouse, children, parents, and other legally connected relatives through marriage, birth, or adoption. However, this coverage does not apply to anyone who isn’t a family member or a child under 21 in your care. This means that friends, guests, or your adult children's partners are not covered, regardless of how long they stay or their reason for being there.
The only exception is if you have a long-term partner with whom you share household expenses and responsibilities, even if you're not married. In this case, you may be able to add them to your policy as a named insured, provided you can demonstrate that you function as a couple in all ways except legally. A named insured holds the same status as the policy owner and is specifically named in the policy.
