Another River X season doing Race Director stuff. This of course includes paddling the route. For 2024, that means traversing Algonquin Park along a less traveled section of the Madawaska River through the Head Creek Marsh. Another highlight is the Oxtongue River with its ever-changing attitude and spectacular water falls. Normally the domain of Tripper canoes, this route is a great challenge on SUP. Backcountry obstacles both above and below the waterline are supplied in abundance by Mother Nature. This season has also sparked interest in backcountry SUP touring. We’ve fielded more than a few questions about what type of board to use. For these scouting sessions, I paddle an inflatable race board such as NSP Canada's O2 Race. An inflatable race board is ideal for backcountry touring and camping. Super light on the portage. Bomb proof in the hazards. Fast enough to keep your pace. Can be rigged to carry all your gear. After 3 months of paddling, it is my opinion the NSP Ninja 14x24 is a perfect MRX/Adventure Racing weapon for the SUP paddler. My board has seen quite a bit of action this season. It is my favourite and really is a perfect option for the person wanting one fast race board that is also capable in adverse and demanding conditions. I classify the 14x24 size as a very fast "all condition" board. The deep dug out design allows for a gear bag pocket that sits in front of your feet and places the bag out of the way. This results in a lower centre of gravity, and the board’s stability actually improves with a fully loaded gear bag. Narrower boards will be faster in ideal/picture-perfect conditions, but if your paddling life include unpredictable weather and water and you are looking for a fast and efficient board in all conditions the NSP 14x24 Ninja is King.
