As part of the Call to Action number 80, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada called on the Government of Canada to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honor survivors, their families and communities, and, to ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital aspect of the reconciliation process.
On June 3, 2021, the Government of Canada established September 30 as a statutory holiday for all federally regulated workers which was followed by the Province of BC marking that same day, September 30, as Truth and Reconciliation Day.
While the statutory holidays do not apply to private educational institutions like VPC, as a member of Vancouver's post-secondary education community, Vancouver Premier College stands with all public and private education institutions in support of our First Nations peoples and in the recognition of the Truth and Reconciliation process and day of commemoration.
I have provided below a link to the Summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and would encourage everyone to strengthen their personal awareness and understanding of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and colonization on local and urban indigenous populations by reviewing this summary report this September 30.
