GROW YOUR OWN SAFFRON! Here’s something you didn’t think you could grow yourself: saffron! This spice is worth more than its weight in gold and is harvested from the saffron crocus or Crocus sativus. Saffron is the anther of the flower which is collected and then dried. It is used to colour and flavour various dishes including paella. The saffron crocus is a fall blooming species usually flowering in September. There are other species of beautiful fall blooming crocus which you can also plant to give your garden a little cheerful lift as the temperatures cool after a hot summer.

CHOOSE YOUR COMMON NAME: Balloon Plant or Hairy Balls! It’s up to you. Gomphocarpus physocarpus is a milkweed relative with beautiful lavender and white flowers and cool inflated seed heads. It is a nectar source for pollinators and can be a larval host plant for . Though hardy to zone 8, it can be protected in winter for many years of enjoyment.

SPRING EPHEMERALS - Corydalis & Chionodoxa - Spring ephemerals emerge in early spring, bloom beautifully, and go dormant by summer. Their yearly cycle of growth is perfect for adding extra early spring colour into perennial borders. They bloom when your perennials are still dormant and go dormant when the perennials finally wake up to take over the show. Fumewort or Corydalis solida and glory-of-the-snow or Chionodoxa are wonderful spring ephemerals for planting throughout your perennial border in sun or shade.

GIANT HIBISCUS - Our perennial are in bud and bloom with flowers as big as your face! They come in reds, pinks, whites and, in the case of Bleu Brulee, lavender blue. They have the largest flowers in the mallow family and are hardy to zone 4. Grow them in full sun with good moisture or in pots.

BROKEN AND REMBRANDT TULIPS are famous for their amazing colour patterns with stripes, speckles and flushes in a range of colours. Every flower is different. If grown in full sun and fertilized each year when they emerge, they can come back year after year.

CASA BLANCA LILIES IN BLOOM! August is the time for oriental lilies with their huge flowers and intense, sweet and spicy fragrance. We have the pure white Casa Blanca lilies blooming now! Plant them in the mid border between your existing perennials to add extra layers of colour into the garden.

AUTUMN CROCUS - The fall-blooming Colchicum emerge in late summer and fall with large, beautiful flowers in shades of pink, lavender-pink and white. Some have single flowers and others offer double forms. Plant them where they can emerge through ground covers or between perennials. In coastal BC they also benefit from a little overhead cover from trees or shrubs to protect them from the fall rains. Foliage emerges in spring and goes dormant in summer. Hardy to at least zone 4.

CAMAS LILIES - These beautiful true blue (and white) spikes of starry flowers hail from BC and the western states. First Nations have known about them since time immemorial and harvested the bulbs of quamash and C. leichtinii for food. They add unique vertical beauty to the mid spring garden and will attract pollinators like butterflies. You could also eat them!

POPPY ANEMONE - The beautiful large-flowered Anemone coronaria are windflowers for the sun. They love hot sunny spots and provide a burst of colour in mid to late spring. Plant them where they can grow through ground covers or between summer perennials that aren’t providing any colour yet. They also love containers which allows cold climate gardeners to protect them in winter.

NAKED LADIES! Amaryllis belladonna and their hybrids with Nerine, Amarine, are wonderful fall-blooming bulbs that offer light to dark pink (and sometimes white) flowers from late summer to October! Grow them in hot, sunny spots. In colder zones they do great in pots.

GLORIOUS GLORIOSA! Gloriosa carsonii or gloriosa lily is a subtropical vine with incredible flowers with petals like flames of red and yellow. They are apparently hardy to zone 8 so could survive outside in coastal BC in a warm microclimate with winter mulch. Though it is safest to grow in a pot and protect in winter which gardeners in the rest of the country can do. Plants grow from large rhizomes so you just let plants go dormant and dry in winter and keep above freezing. We have blooming plants available now at the nursery. In the winter we’ll have them in the Summer Bulb Pre-Order for spring shipping as bare root rhizomes. Sign up for the Bulb Alert on our website.

PLUMERIA! Grow your own frangipani! Plumeria or frangipani are large tropical shrubs or small trees with thick, succulent trunks and lush green paddle-shaped leaves. They are famous for their magnificent, boldly-coloured and sweetly-scented flowers used to make leis, the flower necklaces of Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. They are also used by various other cultures around the world. The flowers are often darkest in colour when they first emerge and lighten as they age. They are most strongly scented at night with notes of jasmine, citrus, gardenia, and other tropical fragrances. Grow them as a houseplant in winter with a summer vacation outside in the warmer months. They are drought tolerant but regular watering and fertilizing will get you the most flowers.
