Performing again and again, even after a 'less than ideal' one builds RESILIENCY. Even the most professional + seasoned musicians have messed up LIVE ON STAGE!! IN FRONT OF HUMANS! SOMETIMES MANY OF THEM!!

It's important to feel your feelings after the fact - it's OKAY to feel disappointed, embarrassed, or 'not good enough' - those are feelings. They're not 'truth'.

My best advice? Go do it again, sweet pea. We need your art! 💛✨

No shame if you've believed these in the past (or maybe currently!) - the best thing about singing and voice science is that it constantly EVOLVES.

If the only reason why you want to belt is because you think it’s impressive…I’m here to burst your bubble. 💥

Belt is a specific type of vocal quality/resonance/colour (whatever terminology floats your boat) and it can be HIGHLY effective when used in the right context.

If you wanna belt because you’ve come to an emotionally heightened part in a song, and it FEELS natural, then…YES?! Do you. 💃

If you DON’T wanna belt because you aren’t interested in it (lots of singers aren’t, and that’s perfectly okay!) then…YES?! Do you. 💃

Ah yes, the ever elusive ‘belt’ - WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?! 😟

Let’s break it down a bit, shall we? 🎶

Belting is ABSOLUTELY an exciting way to sing, but it shouldn’t be the ‘be all/end all’ (ie. it’s *EQUALLY* important as singing breathy, softly, in a mix, etc).

Belt is simply a type of vocal colour/style choice! 🎨🎤

Today is my 36th birthday 🥳🎉 it's a day where I reflect upon the past year of my life - things that are going well and noticing what's maybe NOT working as well, and digging deep into the WHY.

I've spent some time reflecting over some life lessons that have really permeated my heart and soul lately. My word for 2024 was 'self-compassion' but I feel led towards connection more than anything. Connection with my creative self, connection with students and clients, friends, family, nature, God, etc.

On World Voice Day, let's talk about a common voice disorder (one that affects yours truly!) - Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

First - there is nothing wrong with you if you have been diagnosed with MTD! Personally for me, I find that it 'revvs up' post illness when there may still be some vocal fold swelling. The one thing that relieves it is visiting Aaron Low, MS/SLP/SVS over at The Voice Clinic in Toronto to get a a scope AND laryngeal massage, to release tension in the larynx/jaw/tongue.

If you suspect you have MTD, PLEASE get thee to a voice specialist like a laryngologist! 💛

When you work on what it means to be authentic, it shows in your WHOLE damn self. In your singing, in your writing, in your intentionality, and in your creativity!

Let's talk confidence, friends.

Confidence is not something that you just 'wake up with' one day, after all of those years pining to feel that way!

I whole-heartedly believe that confidence is a ✨byproduct✨ consisting of several things.

➡ 1. Self Care (UGH this word gets thrown around a lot!): This doesn't mean taking long luxurious bubble baths or taking a nap (although those things are 😍). This means really asking yourself what your SOUL needs. Specific time carved out to move your body? Awesome. Specific time carved out to nourish your creativity (in whatever way that speaks to you)? Check.

➡ 2. Surrounding yourself with GOOD. FREAKIN. PEOPLE. I can't tell you how understated this one is. You are who you hang out with. And if there's someone in your life who is constantly bringing you down, bringing out negative pieces of you, or making you feel sh*tty...then maybe it's time to re-evaluate. 💛

➡ 3. Repeating Mantras or Affirmations. Sometimes this can feel cheesy AF (it felt that way when I started doing it!) - but the more consistent I got with it, the more my mindset really started shifting. I started believing those words. I started believing those words about MYSELF. This is one of my daily practices that I will never let go of! ✨
