Cannabis and Seniors
By Peter Yurek, BSc.Phm.
According to the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, the number of seniors aged 65 and over checking into emergency rooms (ERs) in Ontario for cannabis poisoning has increased significantly over eight years. The study reported an ER visit rate of 5.8 per 100,000 before the legalization of cannabis. Heat affects some people more than others. Outdoor workers, children and elderly, agricultural workers, people who are experiencing homelessness, and people who have chronic illness or take specific medications - these individuals may be more at-risk for heat-related illness.
Please check on those in your life who are more vulnerable to this extreme heat and know the signs of heat related illness.

June is Migraine Awareness Month AND Men's Health Month!
Are you a man living with migraine disease? What has been your experience?
Due in part to the stigma of migraine being a “women’s disease,” men are less likely to seek treatment, receive a diagnosis and proper treatment, and join the advocacy community. 70% of men with migraine remain undiagnosed.
In order to help lower that number, ask the 3 ID-3 questions for migraine screening. A yes to 2 out of 3 of these questions gives you a 90% likelihood of probable migraine. 1- Has a headache limited your activities for a day or more in the last three months? 2- Are you nauseated or sick to your stomach when you have a headache? 3- Does light bother you when you have a headache?
Men’s migraine attacks may vary from the stereotypical attacks in that they are less likely to include one-sided or throbbing head pain; nausea; photophobia (light sensitivity); phonophobia (sound sensitivity); and allodynia (touch sensitivity.)
Remaining undiagnosed has many risks. You are more likely to have a misdiagnosis like sinus or tension headache, and be treating them with less effective medications. You may be taking OTC medications which may put you at risk for medication overuse headache (MOH.) In men with migraine, the risk of a heart attack is increased by 42%. Being unaware of this risk keeps you from taking preventative actions and informed choices.
Men with migraine, share your story. You are not alone. In fact, at age 40, a man is more likely to experience migraine than either ulcers or erectile dysfunction. We need your voice. Help advocate for better research, diagnosis, and treatment options.

As we celebrate Pride Month it is important to further our understanding of the needs, challenges and successes of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community. There are many causes of a cough longer than a week. Please review symptoms of pertussis in this link and listen to a recording of the cough associated with pertussis in the updated post here https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fow.ly%2FIVXA50SbMiY&h=AT14f9xg3zApaskIQElcWmMecipMVHbJ39v2cE705Jf5OFpq26_YA35R4-_i-qgyY_mx-jmHnAc1NBLU3uQk6ysieHwno1zBsDFQCRlsYPBh6jlw0RK0CXWkogaO929r3P9XcO8&s=1.
Southwestern Public Health is urging parents and guardians to keep themselves and their children up to date with the pertussis vaccine after a recent rise in cases in the region. Public health advises anyone who has a cough lasting longer than one week to seek assessment through their primary care provider.
Additionally, Southwestern Public Health is monitoring pertussis cases in schools. If a student receives a letter from public health about pertussis exposures and develops a cough, they are encouraged to get tested by their primary care provider.

Coming out is a way of saying, “I am allowing something inside of me to surface to the outside. I am trusting you with this part of myself.”
This is a invitation to connect. It is not a matter of debate or an opportunity to question... it is an opening of a door and an opportunity to validate.
So, when our kids share parts of their identity with us, let’s respond with affirmation and pride. After all, a parent’s voice becomes a kid’s self-talk: When we celebrate them for who they are, they’re much more likely to love and celebrate *themselves* for who they are.
These are some excellent opportunities for OHIP covered psychotherapy for parents with adhd, emotional regulation for parents, mindfulness based parenting, perimenopause. They require a referral from a physician or NP so if interested book with us to discuss.
