You know when new episodes air, it’s in your Google calendar, and your partner knows not to interrupt until the credits roll because you’re OBSESSED.

What you might not realize is that there’s a formula for posting binge-worthy Instagram stories that your followers don’t want to miss...

(and the best personal brands leverage it to position themselves as experts and go-to thought leaders in their industries).

Part of the magic of a personal brand is it invites us to connect with the creators and brands we love.

We get the inside scoop, the play-by-play, and a peek into someone’s world in a way that makes us feel like we’re in their inner circle.

We feel like they’ve shared something with us that’s just for their friends (and we’re one of them!).

Instagram stories are the PERFECT place to create an “if you know, you know”, “I’m only telling you because you’re my best friend” feeling that makes people want to learn from you.

Your willingness to show up and be seen is what decides the amount of fun and authority you have in business.

Whoever told you that owning a business needs to be only hard work all of the time was lying to you.

Follow through and the ability to press through things that make you uncomfortable is non-negotiable, but in my books, so is fun.

When you build your brand around showing up as you are, you create content that has potential clients thinking “I want to be best friends with her. She could help me change my life” and current clients coming back saying “you know I’ll buy whatever you create - you’re my favourite!”

That kind of magnetism isn’t magic (even if the synchronicities it creates can feel like it) and it isn’t a mystery.

You create it by consistently showing up with your full personality and depth of expertise leading the way. Sharing your story.

That’s how you become a sought-after authority in your world.

At the end of the day, people want to work with people. That process is more personal than most things we do in a day.

And when you learn to be your full self (professional, personal, self-led, and full of stories), the right people can’t look away (and neither can you).

Your brand starts with something way deeper than fonts and colours.

Your brand starts with self-trust.

Do you trust yourself to be the same person no matter the circumstances?

Or are you thrown into a panic when you flop a pitch, post a reel with a couchful of clean laundry in the background, or someone with more impressive credentials walks in the room?

A brand identity is just all the pretty things that represent what you bring to the table.

How you lead yourself through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship is what sets the tone for how a potential client will receive your marketing efforts.
It’s not even necessarily a conscious thing. They can just feel it from you.

There’s a process of creating space for that self-trust, taking risks and proving to yourself that you’re on your own team, and giving yourself the support you need to step out of your comfort zone and do something that could create real connections (even if doing it scares the s**t out of you).

And that process starts when you decide to be true to yourself in every room you walk into.

“TRUST ME! I am concerned for you and want you to not go to jail for this.”
..said the text I got from the person trying to scam me by telling me the police were investigating the use of my Social Insurance Number at the border (for the third time this month).🤔

It’s a little like when your date says they don’t understand why you’re so upset at their wildly insensitive joke since they’re “a nice person”...🙄

There are some things you shouldn’t have to SAY if you want to connect with someone: they should just feel it.

Your brand works the same way.

Here’s three things your brand MUST communicate at a glance for a dazzling first impression:

1️⃣STORY & VALUES

No one should have to go hunting for your story and values (they’re the core of what you care about - not just some corporate buzzwords you slapped on the about section of your website… right?)

No matter how someone experiences your brand (social media, business card, copy in an email, etc) EVERYTHING should flow out of your story and create an instant connection with your values.

2️⃣YOU are the best for THEM

The best way to stand out from a crowded industry of certifications and elevator pitches is to let your personality be the differentiating factor.

No one can give your clients the unique approach and perspective that you can, so share it loudly and often.

A brand that showcases your true self creates an emotional on-ramp for connection.

3️⃣What to EXPECT during and after working with you

The energy of your brand is the energy your clients will expect throughout their time with you.

Stuffy and formal translates as impersonal and matter-of-fact.

Amateur-ish or poorly designed reads as disorganized and chaotic.

But high-quality, intentional designs and language get clients excited for a competent, seamless, and personalized experience with you. They’ll already be drafting a glowing testimonial before you’ve wrapped it all up!

Being copied SUCKS.

Whether you’re a 6-year-old who’s older brother won’t stop mimicking her every word on the 20-minute carpool ride to school or a 41-year-old founder who’s just discovered a rival company is ripping off your hard work, no one wants to be copied.

Sure, imitation might be the highest form of flattery, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying. 🫠

The good news?

You can be someone no one can copy.

It’s surprisingly simple, actually.

Because no one can copy you being yourself.

They might be able to mimic your appearance or tone, but no one can copy the things that you care about, the journey you’ve walked to get here, the things that you’ve learned, or the way that you relate to the world.

THAT is purely yours, friend.

And that’s why it’s so important to build a brand that oozes personality.

When your audience can’t even interact with your brand for a second without encountering your unfiltered personality, not only will the right ones be MAGNETIZED to you, the people who try to copy what you put into the world will find their knockoffs feel cheap and empty because it’s missing the secret ingredient.

YOU are the secret ingredient in everything you do. 🤍

Your personality is what your clients love about you and your story is 100% unique.

No one can copy that, and no one can take it away from you.

So be yourself.

I DON’T KNOW HOW TO BE MYSELF!😭

If that sounds like you, don’t panic.

First, you’re not alone.

We’re so bombarded every day with inspirational podcast interviews and posts about someone’s multi-7-figure months and blockbuster movies with sweeping stories and an epic score to add to the drama, that it’s hard to feel like our ordinary everyday lives as entrepreneurs could hold anyone’s attention for long.

Being yourself doesn’t have to mean your life is the stuff of an epic NYT Bestselling biography-turned-Netflix special in order to matter to your audience.

Second, you actually totally do know how to be yourself, just maybe not on purpose.

talks about selecting the aspects of your natural personality that you choose to “dial up to 11” when you build your personal brand.

It really can be as simple as figuring out what parts of the person you are every day without thinking about it are the parts that connect with the people you want to work with and designing your brand (your public image and the perception your audience has of you and your work) around those things.

Third, messaging is everything.

Sometimes the tricky part isn’t so much being yourself but TALKING about yourself.

Copywriting is an entire profession in its own right, and learning to talk about yourself in an authentic way that communicates clearly and emotionally to your audience is a skill.

Thankfully, all skills can be learned with enough guidance and practice.🤓

Here are some questions you can start with when learning how to bring more of your personality into your brand:

💫How would you teach your good friend or partner about your work? What words, ideas, metaphors, or mental images do you talk about?

💫What were you doing/going through right before you started your business?

💫What might be unexpected about your journey or background?

💫What do you dislike about your industry and what made you realize that?

💫What is something that makes you emotional (teary/angry/excited) about the work you do?

TRUE (but you probably guessed that).

When your brand visuals and messaging are consistently and intentionally crafted around your personality, your relational capacity skyrockets.🚀

This happens because:

✨it humanizes your work and makes it something that your audience can see themselves in and relate to on a personal level

✨the experience people have of you, your thought leadership, and your overall brand improves their perception of the value your provide

✨no one can copy your personality! Embracing it sets you apart and makes it clear that there’s no one else who can meet your client’s needs like you can

Sounds pretty good, right?

In case that wasn’t convincing enough, here’s some personal branding stats I love:

✨77% of consumers are more likely to purchase from a company if its founder has a robust social media presence (PwC, 2022)

✨80% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences. (Hubspot, 2021)

✨83% of consumers trust recommendations from people they feel that they know personally (Neilsen, 2022)

Relationships are POWERFUL.

I love what C.S. Lewis said about how friendship starts the moment one person looks at another and says “you too?!”. Let your audience into who you really are and watch the magic happen!

I know how it feels to be afraid to be yourself in business.

I know what it feels like to be getting ready for a networking meeting with “will they judge me?” and “is this outfit too much?” on loop in your brain.

It’s exhausting. 😣

And it makes your business feel absolutely soul-sucking.

Creating content feels like dragging your 5-year-old self to the dentist. 🤮

Talking price with clients makes your stomach feel like a world-class-gymnastics-routine.

Using those “I can’t stop staring at them” brand photos has you looking over your shoulder for the haters before you even press post.

But let me tell you, you don’t end up being on someone’s bucket list to work with by hiding your brilliance. 💥

I’m learning what my full self-expression looks like and so far, it’s like becoming a soulmate client magnet. ✨

I’ve had no fewer than 5 conversations like this one this last week alone.

Inner work is powerful and self-expression is wildly attractive.

And THAT’S what makes a brand work.🥂

4 Ways Good Branding Gets You DREAM CLIENTS:⁠

1️⃣Get your dream clients to STOP SCROLLING and start paying attention!⁠

Your content has to immediate grab the attention of the right people (the ones you'd be pumped to work with) and be something that they will want to interact with.⁠

2️⃣ Take the stress out of creating beautiful visuals for your business!⁠

Ever sat down to make that post you've been procrastinating on for a few days only to end up doom scrolling and deleting your captions again and again? A solid brand strategy gives you an easy to follow visual direction so that making posts is simple and straightforward and outlines your brand goal and voice to make captions easy.⁠

Pretty graphics aren’t the point. Like at all.

At the end of the day, people aren’t actually attracted to your beautifully laid out Instagram feed.

They really don’t care if you know how to balance colours and fonts.

And they probably aren’t going to look up your brand guide to see the hidden meaning behind your logo.

What people are really looking for is someone who is so unapologetically her self, so deeply connected to her soul purpose, and mind-blowingly turned on by her own offers because she knows that her work can change someone’s whole entire world.

That’s what actually attracts dream clients: YOUR SOUL.

My job as a brand designer and strategist is to figure out how to translate your soul magic into visuals that will stop the scroll and give your dreamboat clients the chance to notice you so they can fall in mad passionate love with your calling.

That’s why effective, strategic, dialled in branding works wonders when you’re ready to dig deep and do the inner work it takes to bring your whole, magical, enchanting, world-changing self to the table.

✨ IT'S FINALLY HERE ✨⁠

I'm so excited and emotional about this launch.⁠

3 months ago I was on a call with the incredible talking about everything that had shifted for me over the summer. ⁠

I told her that there was something different in me, that I could feel myself becoming a new version of me, and that my brand no longer felt aligned with me - like at all. So, with the support of my amazing community, I got to work.⁠

And when I say I got to work, I mean WORK.⁠

✨ Inner work: I had to get honest with myself about who I felt myself becoming and learn to fall in love with her enough to be ready to share her with the world. (Anyone who tells you that branding is as easy as making a few graphics is lying to you)⁠

✨ Work on my craft: The vision that came along with the shifts I was experiencing was asking me to seriously stretch my creative capacities. I needed to learn new programs, skills, workflows, and massively uplevel the experience I was able to provide my clients. I leaned in and got busy.⁠
