Cree Canaries Indigenous Youth Drum Group was formed in the summer of 2017. Although primarily a powwow drum group, the Cree Canaries are often called upon to bring healing and honor through sacred songs to numerous Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) events, including sacred fires, smudge walks, searches, and funerals. In 2021, following the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, a wave of ECM memorials, smudge walks, and sacred fires took place across the country. Cree Canaries were honored to participate in hundreds of these events across North America, helping communities grieve and heal. The group upholds resilience by carrying forward cultural teachings, protocols, songs, storytelling, and dances, amplifying the voices of Indigenous children who need to be heard now more than ever.
In 2024, the Cree Canaries made history as the first-ever recipients of Saskatchewan's Drum Group of the Year award!

Yesterday at the I**S Rd had such a beautiful Rd in Saskatoon! We witnessed the MC call up the first 20 Ladies back up singers to sign their names! He also announced they will be paid! I also donated my lead singer money to the lady's back up singers!

This morning we woke up to a few inboxes from some of the women. They put their names down in the top 20 and they never got paid! Sometimes mistakes happen yes we know!

It's 2024 if you pay 30 lead singers you should pay 30 background singers! I just wanna apologize to those lady's who put their name down and didn't get paid you all sounded so beautiful!

My daughters were really saddened with how the women singers were treated! As a way of giving back they want your name and email in boxed to the Cree Canaries Page! Please note that this is only ment for the women who had their names on the list and did not get paid! Let's learn from this and move forward in a positive way!

Never treat a women that way!
