I once had a person who was a supervisor for a position I held, tell me my job was to stay quiet and not have an opinion. That cut deep. I had been working for the group for several years and felt that in my role I had some input I could provide to make the solution to a problem easier to solve. The individual kept talking as though nothing had been said and not a single supervisor around the table commented although one or two had shocked looks on their faces. A week later I resigned.

I remember being told once in another job that I was too much, that I needed to be less because the me I was didn’t fit the mold of what they wanted or felt an individual working with them should be. I can remember working hard over the next several months to tone myself down, to be less, and the result was I was miserable and had absolutely no energy because I was using everything I had to be less.

How many of us have felt this way or been treated this way? I would estimate more than we think.

So, what can we do? Some things I did was learn more about who I am and what makes me tick. I spent time reading about ways to incorporate gratitude into my life, I started to spend more time being creative, getting into nature, and unplugging from my devices and social media. I learned to not dull my spark for anyone and to work on my personal development daily. I also learned that I need to have creativity to keep my soul happy. From that Hurricane Marketing was born.

There are so many ways to incorporate things that make us smile and bring us joy every single day. All it takes it the first step put the phone down, the email can wait, and take a break. Now repeat every day.

One of my favourite songs says, “Sing, so the back row hears you. Glide, cause walking just won’t do. Dance, you don’t have to know how to. Laugh, like your whole side is hurting, and smile, like you just got away with something.”
