Clocks change on Sunday!
Daylight Savings Time (DST) is the practice of setting the clocks ahead one hour in the spring and then moving them back an hour in the fall to make better use of daylight. The day varies from year to year but it’s always on a Sunday and always at midnight local time so that it’s least disruptive to schedules. This year DST ends on Nov. 3.
It’s a bi-annual headache here in Canada but you may be interested to know that most countries don’t touch their clocks. Countries near the equator have little variances in their hours of daylight throughout the year, while areas near the poles have such a wide difference in daylight (remember that some regions actually have total daylight and total darkness for a period of almost four months) that resetting clocks don’t make any discernible difference.
The first place to adopt DST was Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay), Ontario, in 1908 — but only locally, not nationally. The first countries to adopt DST were Germany, Austria and Hungary in 1916. Proponents of DST believe the shift allows people to enjoy more daylight hours after a typical 9-to-5 workday. You may have heard that the time shift is better for farmers, but this is a myth. In fact, farmers have been one of the strongest lobbying groups against DST since it was first implemented. That’s because farming schedules are dictated by the sun, not a clock, so the official clock reset was unnecessary. Claims that DST reduces energy consumption are a subject of dispute.
Not all of Canada will wake up and head to work an hour later on Nov. 3. Saskatchewan has been perpetually on Central Standard Time since the province adopted the Time Act in 1966. This means that on Nov. 3, Saskatchewan will be on the same time as Manitoba. When DST begins again in the spring, clocks are the same as in Alberta. However, three border communities (Lloydminster, Creighton and Denare Beach) adjust their clocks to match their nearby neighbours.
What do you think of daylight savings time? Should it be abandoned or embraced? Let us know!
Happy Halloween from Maverick Studios!
It took me a few tries and some squinting to plug in a flash drive into a USB port today. In the movies, spies can slide one of those bad boys in, copy an entire hard drive in under a minute and escape undetected. I’m just lucky I didn’t break something. Am I alone? Can you USB in one fast shot?
Maverick Studios is a year old. They grow up so fast. The early years are the hard years but I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks to everyone who helped me to get this far. :)

September 30 is the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.
This federal statutory holiday honors the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It serves as a public commemoration and acknowledgment of the history and horrific impact of residential schools on First Nation families and it is a vital part of the federal government’s reconciliation process.
140 federally-run residential schools operated in Canada from 1867 to 1996. Survivors advocate for recognition and reparations and demand accountability for the harm caused to students, their families, and their communities.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established from 2008-2015 to collect information about the people affected by residential schools. The commission made 94 calls for action — the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80.
All Canadians are encouraged to wear orange shirts on Sept. 30 to promote the concept and understanding that “Every Child Matters.” But there’s more to do beyond wearing orange shirts.
Visit the Government of Canada’s T&R web page for more information, resources, and ways to be involved in this important day. Share your support of this important day — tag your posts with the hashtag on your social media channels.

Think about it… Everyone you love right now was once a stranger. ❤️
It’s been just over a year since a corporate executive decided to eliminate my job and I found myself looking for my next career.
I wish I could say it has all been thrilling. There have been some great moments, for sure. But also a lot of anxiety. Stress. Uncertainty. At times, it all seems a little overwhelming. I’m learning that protecting my mental and physical health is just as critical to my business success as finding clients and booking work. But how do you balance it all?
I'm asking business owners who have been through the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with building something from the ground up. What strategies have you developed for balancing work and life, and more importantly, addressing the mental health challenges that often come with the entrepreneurial journey?
Visit my blog at https://maverick-studios.ca/blog to find out what I've learned so far.

Ever wonder how the Labour Day holiday came about?
This statutory holiday has been observed in Canada since 1894 when workers rallied for better working conditions and pay. Historians have traced the origins of this day to the Nine-Hour Movement (1872), where organizers campaigned to shorten the working day from 12 to nine hours.
The group was unsuccessful, but set a precedent for the Canadian Labour Union, one of the first national labour organizations in the country that later paved the way for groups like the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada (1886). This group lobbied for wage and safety legislation, worker’s compensation, sanitary regulation of workshops and an eight-hour day.
Labour Day celebrations began to spring up in the early 1900s among skilled craftsmen and their organized labour groups, becoming a larger community celebration of working-class solidarity with parades, speeches, games and picnics.
But this day also observes the hard-won rights for organized labour. In the United States, violent clashes between workers and employers, police and militia groups underscored the need for workers’ rights. A coal miners’ strike in Serene, Colorado in 1927 saw six workers shot dead by state police in the dispute. At stake was the workers’ demands for the right to form unions, to have a collective bargaining process and engage in protest.
If not for the work of organized labour, there would be no eight-hour work day, laws restricting child labour, occupational health and safety laws, pensions, paid maternity leave and the right to organize and take job action against an employer — to name a few.
Happy labour day! ✊❤
I think most designers grit their teeth when clients say, "That's too expensive, I can build it myself." It's just not true.
When you pay for expert design services, you get to tap into your designer's experience in typography, branding, appropriate use of white space, photography, marketing ... the results you get from professional design services are worth every penny (and probably more) than if you let your nephew design your ads for you in his basement with Canva (or worse, in Word.)
Good design can enhance your brand, attract an audience and send the right message to get you the customers and sales you want. Get it wrong, and you risk damaging your brand and losing your market when people tune you out.
Invest in your business success with good design. It's worth it.
If you're creating reels on Instagram or Facebook for your business, I can build a customized branded frame for it with your logo and website. It adds a layer of professional polish and ensures your brand is recognized and persistent through your entire message. Contact me for details!

I spent all day Wednesday at Ag in Motion meeting some great ag business owners. I’m always impressed with the range of services and products these entrepreneurs have to offer. When I say “I’m sure glad I met you today,” I really meant it. Thanks for talking with me, offering a bit of shade from the relentless heat and reminding me that the ag sector is full of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
This is strictly a fun post of things that made me snort out loud. Tag your designer friends in this to make them produce weird noises, too.
It can be daunting to find business as a new entrepreneur. I'm learning the ropes of email marketing and how to craft the right message to showcase what I do. I'm still learning to use social media to reach new eyes and ears. (You help whenever you tell your friends and coworkers about my work with Maverick Studios -- your endorsement makes a huge difference.)
It's scary to run your own company. But I choose to see these new challenges as an adventure, not an ordeal. Seems like a better way to think.

National Indigenous People’s Day recognizes and celebrates the culture and contributions of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. First celebrated in 1996, this day was chosen because of its cultural significance as the summer solstice, as well as the day that many Indigenous people celebrate their heritage.
Originally named National Aboriginal Day, it was renamed in 2017. It is a statutory territorial holiday in the Northwest Territories and Yukon. It is not a statutory holiday across the rest of the country.
National Indigenous People’s Day is the first of a series of Celebrate Canada days in June: the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (Quebec) is June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day is June 27 and Canada Day is July 1.
When proclaiming this day, Canada’s Governor General Romeo LeBlanc said it was an occasion for Canadians to come together, reflect on and celebrate the unique heritage traditions and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
