One Day in Saskatoon: Earl Pereira of The Steadies The recording artist's favourite spots in Saskatoon
Another Friday Downtown Spooky Tale.
The Bessborough Hotel was designed by John S. Archibald and John Schofield with its opening in 1935. Permission for the use of the name Bessborough was given by the 9th Earl of Bessborough, who was also the 14th Governor General of Canada at the time. The Earl and the Countess visited the hotel in 1932 while it was still under construction.
The building is considered one of Canada’s grand railroad hotels and after its completion was the tallest building in Saskatoon at 58.5 metres tall with ten floors. Materials used to construct the building were of Canadian origin, including Tyndall stone from Manitoba, brick from Claybank, and tiles from Estevan. The hotel includes 225 guest rooms and suites with countless additional tall tales and stories from the past and present.
Hauntings at the hotel over the years have long been rumoured and shared, children's laughter heard within the stairwells to a woman with messy hair that roams the third floor. Another one is said to be by a silent man in a grey suit and fedora. He is said to be seen on the banquet floor and smile at those who pass by. Guests and staff who have seen the man in the grey suit are struck by his life-like appearance and are unaware that he is a spirit until they report their encounter to those who are aware of the phenomenon.
Maybe it's easy to believe ghostly tales when they are situated in a castle-like building. If only the Bessboroughs walls could truly talk, or perhaps they have been whispering all along.
