๐ŸŒฟโœจ Today, we honor and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day! โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage around this time of year, coinciding with the summer solsticeโ€”the longest day of the year, which holds great significance.

National Indigenous Peoples Day, originally known as National Aboriginal Day, was officially declared on June 21, 1996, by then-Governor General of Canada, Romรฉo LeBlanc. This proclamation followed years of advocacy and support from various Indigenous groups.

Get involved! On June 21, numerous activities across the country showcase the richness and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Mรฉtis cultural expressions and stories.

Letโ€™s take this opportunity to:
๐Ÿ”ธ Learn about Indigenous cultures and traditions.
๐Ÿ”ธ Acknowledge the land we live on and its original stewards.
๐Ÿ”ธ Support Indigenous voices and businesses.
๐Ÿ”ธ Educate ourselves and others about the true history and ongoing issues faced by Indigenous communities.

Visit Sault College Library to explore more resources and deepen your understanding of Indigenous cultures and histories. ๐ŸŒโค๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ“š Celebrate Indigenous History Month with Us! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒŸ

In honor of Indigenous History Month, we are excited to share an incredible resource with you: the podcast 'The Urbariginal'. ๐ŸŽงโœจ

'The Urbariginal' follows Rudy Kellyโ€™s journey as he delves into the complex legacy of his father, a great chief of the Tsimshian Nation. Rudyโ€™s dad was a champion of the language, culture, and community, beloved by many. But Rudy had a complicated relationship with him. As a child, he idolized his father but also feared and even hated him. His father told him that to succeed, he would have to leave everything behind: his family, friends, and culture.

This six-part series takes Rudy back in time to understand how colonization impacted Indigenous people, from those who lived it, to discover who his father really was, and ultimately, to find out more about himself. Itโ€™s a powerful story of identity, culture, and reconciliation.

Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing is explained by saying it refers to learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledges and ways of knowing ... and learning to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all.

Spoken word artist, current Halifax Slam Master and recently appointed Poet Laureate for the Halifax Regional Municipality, Rebecca Thomas also holds the position of Coordinator of Aboriginal Student Services at the Nova Scotia Community College. Coming from an indigenous background whose family has been greatly impacted by residential schools, Ms. Thomas has come to recognize the lack of prominence given to First Nations perspectives within the history of Halifax. As a Miโ€™kmaw woman, she embraces the opportunity to bring her cultural voice to the broader public discussion through the Poet Laureate position, and believes that the arts and poetry can help people heal in ways beyond traditional therapies. โ€œPoetry can give a voice to the voiceless. Poetry can make a powerless person feel powerful. This is why I speak,โ€ said Ms. Thomas.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

A New National Park to Reclaim Indigenous Land
In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia's first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it's fostering healing in return.
