CPA Alberta - Tru North
Amateur Pool/Billiards League! Have Fun, Meet People, Play Pool. Weekly Updated League Information!
Hi everyone,
We have a lot of new players, so let's cover this topic again.
Please mark down DEFENSIVE shots!
What? Why? How?
-What is a "DEFENSIVE" shot, and what is NOT?
A defensive shot (also known as a SAFETY) is a shot taken where the player does NOT intend/hope to pocket a ball, and intends to forfeit their turn at the table.
This is up to the score keepers discretion, but the score keeper can always ask the player after they have finished their shot.
***IMPORTANT***
When hooked and kicking at your object ball, this does NOT mean it's an automatic defense, it also does not mean it ISN'T.
Each shot is unique.
Most players when kicking at a ball still hope it goes in somewhere. Yes they want to hit it, but they also hope it goes in.
When someone kicks at a ball with pace, they are usually hoping it goes in somewhere, somehow.
When the ob is not in an easy pottable location, and the player is merely trying to make contact, probably by hitting soft on it, that is most definitely a DEFENSE, and should be marked as such.
They had no intent or hope to try and make it.
Higher SL players will often try to re-safe their opponents like this, both in 8 Ball and 9 Ball. And no, it does not matter if you are hooked or not. High SL players will often kick at a ball to play Safe, even if they have other options.
They may also attempt a "Kick & Stick" defense shot, with a little more pace.
If they did not try to make Shape, then they likely did not want to make it....which means it's a defensive shot.
Let's look at some other examples of what IS and ISN'T defensive shots.
Generally, low SL players do not play safety shots, unless they are coached to do so.
They almost always are looking to pocket a ball, even if it means smacking a cluster of balls.
If a low SL player tries a bank and misses it by a foot or two, that's NOT a defensive shot.
If a low SL player tries a difficult cut, misses the ball, but still makes a legal shot and hooks their opponent, that's NOT a defensive shot.
If a high SL player misses a shot to set it up near a pocket and strategically leaves their opponent difficult, that IS a defensive shot.
If a high SL player in 9 Ball, banks the object ball to the other end of the table, and makes no effort to create shape on their next ball, that's most likely a defensive shot.
Two-way shots are NOT defensive shots.
What is a two-way shot?
It's when a player attempts to make a ball, even if it's to a more difficult pocket, but ensures a safe leave.
Because the player still attempted to pocket a ball, it's NOT a defensive shot.
***Intentional Fouls***
These ARE most definitely defensive shots.
This includes picking up the cb and handing it to your opponent.
***Intentionally Missed Shots***
If you feel a player is intentionally missing shots, mark them as defensive shots.
Keep it real, if a SL 2 misses a Ball in Hand, it is very unlikely to be intentional.
However, if a SL4-6 does this several times, mark them as defensive shots AND report them to you league operator for poor sportsmanship.
-Why do we mark these in CPA?
Because we have a complex formula that calculates how a player is playing, in order to properly formulate the their SL.
Ex:
A safety battle in a game with 15 innings will produce a flawed handicap result if the defensive shots are not marked down.
-How to mark them?
Simply mark a tick on the right under the defensive shot box.
Here is the APA outline for Defensive Shots.
short vids (1-13)
Defensive Shots - Ep. 1 - Defensive Shots and APA Scorekeeping In this video we define the word defense for APA scorekeeping purposes. Understanding defensive shots is one of the keys to the success of The Equalizer hand...
Until a speed boat zips by.....then it's time to "WAKE" up, and start a new game. π
Should we get some signs made up?
This guy looks like he's enjoying himself.

Attention 8 & 9 Ball teams out of Top Shots Billiards & Ping Pong, Edmonton.
Your team match will be given ONE match table, and will be sharing the extra table(s) by the round.
Right now it has basically been one week team A gets 1 table, the next week team A gets 2 tables. This is both unfair and difficult for those allocating tables.
Instead, each match-up will take turns sharing the extra table(s) with the next match-up closest to them.
(2 matches/4 teams will take turns sharing extra table)
The easiest way to do this is by the round, not by the clock.
Ex:
Teams A&B are playing a match
Teams C&D are playing a match
Match A&B start out playing on two tables for round 1.
And when that individual match/round is done, then match C&D will get two tables for a round, while match A&B play on one table.
And then switch again after that round, etc
Practice time will be for an hour prior to match.
This way every team match should be finished around 10pm, instead of some @9:30 and some @11:00
Make sense?
This is how other leagues do it as well, without someone there to allocate and enforce.
It's just common courtesy.
So please SHARE. π
Hey 9 Ball Teams, Edmonton teams in particular. π
Check out this short vid.
When marking scores for each game, please use "Running Totals", instead of each individual game total, as shown in vid.
It's easier for a few reasons, especially if you need to go back and make a correction.
The entire 9 Ball scorekeeping vid can be viewed here:
https://youtu.be/jtLY6AoNVBQ?si=uedqGZT0EyCIf_sx
Hopefully we will be switching to online scoring in Jan, but for now it's still ink & paper. π
I think Skill Levels may drop if we had to use these tables for league.
But, who would like to play on one?
Was a great Celebration of Monchito Victoria this Friday, Sept 20th.
Chito was a valued member of our pool community and community at large.
Here are another couple valued CPA members who spoke at Chito's Celebration.

So proud of our Jack & Jill Champions:
James & Christine Rowles
They battled hard here in Vegas but also just to get down here and participate.
As many of you know, Christine was in a serious accident earlier this summer, leaving her in the hospital for several weeks and wheelchair bound since her release.
But, they are Pool Troopers!
Not only did they drive down, but she played in a wheelchair, which was difficult to get get used to.
We at CPA Alberta wish you a speedy recovery and a safe drive home.
Was so good to watch you guys go hill/hill in your last match and just about pull it out.
So proud of our 9 Ball team:
Pool Hub
(formerly known as: Cheetos Crunch)
You guys lost a heartbreaker last night at the APA WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS in Las Vegas.
So close!
I know Monchito is proud as well.
Here's a few of your highlights.
So proud of our two 8 Ball teams after 3 days of battling at the Largest Pool Tournament in the World.
(APA WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIPS)
Both made it to the round of 64, and we're just a few wins away from the quarter-finals.
Congrats to "Just the Tip" and "124 Cue"
Making Alberta proud!
Way to go!
Hello CPA players,
Fall session is quickly approaching.
Starts first week of Sept (16-17 weeks)
And then we move into Spring session in Jan.
There is NO registration fee to register a team with CPA.
We just need to know that your team is in.
Previously existing teams are easy to add to a new session.
New teams, we would need some player information, and new players to CPA would need to do their annual APA registration.
If you are entering an existing team, and there's a few roster changes, they can be made on the scoresheet on week 1.
With the prices of everything going up, we were able to keep our pricing for the 24-25 sessions unchanged @ $12/player ($60 team)
* Some locations may have "green fees", while others don't *
Also, if you would like to change Home Location and/or evenings, be sure to let us know.
Here is the tentative list of locations, evenings, and formats:
Mondays:
Sharks Club (SG) - 9 Ball
Tuesdays:
Metro Billiards / Top Shots (Edm) - 8 Ball
Crown & Derby (BV) - 8 Ball
Thursdays:

Wow!
So proud of all the teams & Players that showed up to play for a chance to punch their ticket π« to the Largest Pool Tournament in the World.
APA/CPA/JPA/APA World Pool Championships in Las Vegas.
What makes this such a Prestigious Tournament to play in?
The main factor is, no team can buy their way in.
With over 1200 teams who Qualify to go, it's only possible by battling through Tri-Annuals and World Qualifiers to punch your ticket.
Also, APA pays out to 100% of the playing fields. Even the last place teams receive a min of $350 USD.
While 1st in 8 Ball is $30,000 USD
and 1st in 9 Ball is $20,000 USD
***Prize Money π***
Thank you so much for all the support, encouragement, compliments, and love.
We tried to make a great tournament experience for all teams playing and a great league experience for all those who play in our league sessions. Thank you for making YOUR league even better by being a part of it.
