In light of the recent tragedy in Oklahoma, we want to share important information on keeping your horses safe.

🔬 What Are Ionophores? Ionophores are compounds commonly added to livestock feed to promote growth and prevent disease. The most commonly used ionophore is monensin. While beneficial for certain species, even a small amount of ionophores is highly toxic to horses.

🚨 How Can Horses Be Exposed? Horse feeds can become contaminated with ionophores when produced at feed mills that also handle feeds for other species. Residual ionophore on machinery or human error can lead to equine feed being mistakenly contaminated with ionophores. For farms that have both cattle and horses on-site, it’s crucial to keep their feeds separate and clearly labeled to prevent exposure.
