I wore 🩳 for the first time today, and felt a bit like a white 🐄 TBH. I used to go tanning, but after 9 skin cancers, I sure as sh*t do not anymore.

So I slathered on some self tanner (😬) and ordered a new pair of shorts that hopefully will be more flattering than the ones I have 🤞🏻. I thought to myself, “at least I am a strong pasty Mama 😝”.

Having muscle definition makes me feel more confident with my body. I focus more on what weight I can lift, than what I weigh.

Do you ever reflect on the people in your life who have helped shape your journey?
fitness is a fellow Fitness Coach and we have known each other for 14 years, since before we became Mamas. I was a Corporate Sales Manager at a luxury, boutique hotel in Vancouver, and Emily was already rock’n the fitness world, training out of the hotel gym. (I used to train there when I could on my lunch break).

A huge reason I joined a gym after 7 years of home workouts since a becoming Mom, and in particular, was Emily.

Although I got Certified as a Personal Trainer in my early twenties, I believe seeing Emily in her element, and the impact she has on her clients, inspired me to recertify, and to start my Fitness Coaching business.

Health has been my biggest value since I was young (I share my story on my website), and it has been a privilege to be able to finally serve others in this area.

No experience is ever wasted and returning to commuting and travel wasn’t an option as a mother. (I’ve been working out in a gym since I was a teenager and started coaching ski racing then as well).

Emily and I continue to see each other in Squamish several days a week, and sometimes have the opportunity to train together, spurring each other on, and learning and growing together. Grateful to be connected to you on this journey of life Em 🙏 Keep shining your light ✨

🔥 Tips For Building Muscle 💪🏻
- Eat 20-30 grams protein at each meal
- Lift Heavy S**t aka Resistance Train (3-5 days a week, with 1-2 reps in reserve (RIR), harnessing the law of progressive overload. “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you”. If you’ve been doing 3 sets of 15 reps for years and hit a plateau, it’s time to go heavier, and do more sets and less reps for hypertrophy.
- Walk 10,000 steps/day
- Sleep 💤 7-8 hours/night
Rinse and repeat!

I have spoken with many women who are frustrated that they can’t seem to build muscle, have stubborn fat they haven’t been able to release, and often feel fatigued, and lightheaded. A common theme is that these women are underfed, running on fumes of calories, so their body as a survival instinct, slows metabolic processes, and holds onto fat.

My daily smoothie… every single day. Even 🎄 and my 🥳 folks. Because no matter what happens for the rest of the day, I have a solid foundation 🪨 42 grams of protein, healthy fat, fibre and a ton of antioxidants 💪🏻

-1 cup milk/nut mylk of your choice (I like Silk Almond Cashew protein milk. It makes smoothie a bit thick so you can do half regular almond/oat/cow milk)
-1 cup frozen berries
-1 big spoonful almond or nut butter
-1 scoop protein powder (I like Pro Line Nutrition Iso Pro Whey Protein Vanilla, 30 grams protein, sweetened with stevia and monk fruit, as clean as they come)

Do you do squats?

There are a number of variations of squats, which is great since this is a foundational movement.

I started using a barbell one year ago, when I joined , and it has increased my overall body strength, especially my core, given it is required to brace tightly while moving heavy loads.

Squats are a functional exercise that:
➡️ Boost your calorie burn during and after, due to multiple muscle groups involved, and lean muscle mass produced, raising basal metabolic rate
➡️ Strengthen your core
➡️ Improve your balance and posture
➡️ Make you a stronger ⛷️ and 🚴 🚵‍♀️
➡️ 🔥 🍑

This powerhouse movement uses a ton of muscles including:
* Glutes
* Quads
* Hamstrings
* Adductor (inner thigh)
* Hip Flexors
* Calves
* Core muscles

If you haven’t yet done barbell squats, start light and perfect your form (range of motion aka depth, trumps heavy load).

I have gone from having an unhealthy relationship with my body, food and exercise that led to being hospitalized several times for an eating disorder as a teen, to one of compassion, vibrance, strength and confidence. I am a firm believer in strong over skinny, eating dessert, and doing enjoyable outdoor cardio.

Clients come to me who want to get stronger, as they know that bone density and muscle mass decrease after age 35, and they want a program unique to them, that will get them results. They desire to feel vibrant and confident in their body post babies, and I have been there (regained core strength after 2 C Sections). My clients become empowered with the knowledge and healthy lifestyle tools to train effectively and efficiently on their own, and make decisions that serve their highest self.

A huge reason why I am so passionate about health and wellness is because my mom had cancer when I was growing up, and died when I was 22. I learned at a young age that 🎤 life is precious, tomorrow is promised to no one and health is our greatest asset ✨.

Health is the platform from which everything else stems and determines how we show up in life. Being vibrant, strong and confident is available to all of us!

What does relaxation look like for you?

First I must state that I am driven AF and relaxing isn’t my strong suit 😬 (the 🍎 doesn’t fall far from the tree).

Before having Brodie five years ago, I used to “chill” by drinking 🍷 , eating junk and staying up late watching 📺 on the weekends. After I became a mother and especially of multiples, and MY time drastically reduced, I realized those activities may have felt good for a fleeting moment, but were not refilling my cup, or contributing to me feeling vibrant ⚡️.

Nowadays, after I have worked in all the ways, I relax for a few minutes😅. It might mean gentle 🧘‍♀️ or stretching, meditation, 📖 , or a sauna sesh.

Do you give yourself permission to be a beginner/be embarrassed/stay in your own lane and try not to care what other people think as you learn something new?

I believe we get better at this as we age. I am grateful that my late mother modelled not caring too much about what other people think (are they really even thinking about you 😜), and throwing as much 🎨 on your big, beautiful canvas as possible.

This is one of the greatest perspective shifts people who are faced with terminal illness receive. 🎙️ THIS IS IT! This one precious life is all we get.

This is why I give myself permission to get in the arena, even though I feel like I suck compared to others. There will always be people better, and there will always be people worse. Stay in your own lane, and say yes to taking chances! I do this with mountain biking, which I started 1.5 years ago. I do it when I go skating with the kids (I can’t 🛑 🤣). I do it with my Fitness Coaching business. Do I know how to train and coach? Heck ya! I’ve lived and breathed it for decades. Run my own business? Lots to learn 🤓.

This spring/summer, I signed up for Ladies ⛳️ Nights. Am I nervous? Absolutely! But when I think about golf, I think about how much my mom loved it, her determination, joy and bravery for learning and getting our family into it. And that the only way to get better at something is to do the dang thing. Confidence comes in the doing.

This feels kind of vulnerable, but it’s important. There have been times and even seasons in my life, where people have tried to tear me down in order to make themselves feel superior, and/or to avoid taking responsibility for their action/inaction. I am certain this type of behaviour contributed to me developing an eating disorder as a teen.

None of us can skate through life without this happening to us. As we mature and become more conscious humans, we gain a better understanding of human psychology, and that the way people treat us is never about us, it’s about them.

Do you keep the same sleep schedule on weekends as during the week?

Before having kids, I used to stay up later on weekends, drink 🍷 , watch 📺 and 🛌 in a bit. As a mother with young children, sleeping in past 6:30am is not an option. I learned that I had go to bed by 11pm on weekends, in order to not feel like ☠️ the next day and to be able to get sh*t done.

I also learned to associate alcohol with more pain than pleasure, because it had negative effects on my 💤 and I would wake up the next morning feeling like I had robbed from the fresh day 🌄 , by poisoning my body the night before.

While this lifestyle isn’t for everyone, it has helped me to feel my best, so I can show up feeling vibrant ✨. Energy ⚡️is life, and we must do everything in our power to prime our best state to show up and serve those we love, and live life full tilt.

Bonus, going to bed earlier and reducing/cutting alcohol consumption is a life hack for having more time in your day 🪄

Does this land for you?

For me, the number on the scale is a ridiculous way to measure self worth. I do not believe in weighing myself regularly, I do it about twice/ year 🤯. Because I am always within a 5-8 pound range, the same clothing size, and I can gauge where I’m at by how I feel, look and how my clothes fit.

Weighing myself just messes with my head. If I’m at the low end of my typical range, I’m happy😁, if I’m at the high end, I feel crappy about myself☹️. Several years in my teens were regimented with daily weigh-ins, body composition testing, and strict meal plans, and I do not find these necessary or helpful now, in order to maintain my weight.

I do not count calories, macros, meal plan, or restrict foods; I eat a balanced diet and move my body every day. No scale necessary. Yes I do focus on eating protein (at least 30 grams ideally), fat and carbs at every meal, getting 2-4 Litres of 💧 a day, and I am aware that days I do not eat enough of the nutrients I need, I crave more refined carbs. Curiosity and compassion, over judgement, is an empowering perspective to hold ❤️.

*This doesn’t work for everyone and some people find weighing themselves is beneficial.
