We are delighted to support the Terre Program. Bringing newcomer children from diverse backgrounds together, with a platform to express themselves through music, is a wonderful initiative fostering community and belonging. After all, music is a universal language.
Thank You VOCM Cares Foundation and Fortis for Supporting the Terra Program!
We are immensely grateful to the VOCM Cares Foundation and Fortis for their vital financial support of Shallaway Youth Choir’s Terra program. This innovative initiative, launched with local schools has transformed the lives of newcomer children in our community. 🌍❤️
Since 2023, Terra has welcomed over 30 children from diverse backgrounds, providing a platform to express themselves through music. Diego said it best, “I always wanted to be in a choir with people from all around the world,” while Haya added, “I loved all the people I met from different countries.”
Terra’s impact goes beyond singing; it fosters community and belonging. Yorus captured it perfectly, “It’s really nice to have friends from different countries and learn another language.” Artistic Director Kellie Walsh emphasized, “Music and culture in our province will evolve thanks to the rich experiences of our newcomer families.”
With no fees, no transportation requirements, and programming in familiar school spaces, Terra ensures accessibility for all. Thank you, VOCM Cares Foundation and Fortis, for helping us build an inclusive community for the future. We look forward to continuing this transformative program! 🎶
Quick Facts:
32 newcomer children participated in the Terra program.
The following languages and cultures were represented: Persian/Farsi (Iran), Tigrinya (Eritrea), Russian (Ukraine), Spanish (Peru & Mexico), English (Nigeria), Tagalog (Philippines), Ukrainian (Ukraine), English (USA), Arabic (Syria, Sudan, Libya, & Bahrain)
Terra performed five times to over 2900 people including children and adults from St. John’s to Bay Roberts.
