We are working to challenge and change societal attitudes about violence. VPAE originally began as the Interagency Committee on Violence Against Women in 1988.

Violence Prevention Avalon East is an alliance of community and government agencies dedicated to ending violence in our homes and communities. This committee consisted of representatives from government, community agencies and individuals in St. John’s involved in service delivery to women victims of violence. From Vocm

Three people have been taken into custody following a lengthy weapons-related incident on Brazil Street.

RNC responded to the scene around 6:00 a.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. A number of officers remained on the scene for hours. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes while police attended to the scene.

Police say the incident has been peacefully resolved and three people have been taken into custody.

Earlier Story

RNC officers remain on the scene of a weapons offence at a home on Brazil Street in downtown St. John’s.

Police first received reports of shots fired early Sunday morning and soon cordoned the area off for public safety.

Tammy Davis, who lives near the property of interest, told VOCM News that she woke to noises early in the morning, but didn’t think anything of it until she saw the large police presence.

When she got up, she saw some RNC officers positioned with long guns outside her window. Once she made her presence known to an officer, police told Davis she had to leave her home while they attended to the incident.

Davis says their neighbourhood is relatively quiet and this type of activity is unusual.

Due to situation, police requested that the annual Downtown St. John’s Christmas Parade be rescheduled. The parade will go ahead on Sunday, December 3 at noon.

Yesterday marked the start of the 16 Days of Activism campaign and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The date was designated in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly. The day pays tribute to the Mirabal sisters and urges the recognition of gender-based violence throughout the world.

My name is Jailen Spurrell (she/her), I am the Manager of Fund Development and Community Engagement with Violence Prevention Avalon East (VP-AE).

Violence Prevention Avalon East is an equality-seeking organization that is dedicated to ensuring a safe environment, where all people in Newfoundland and Labrador have the ability to live without fear of violence. We work to address violence at its roots by providing support to survivors, education in our communities, and advocating for the prevention and early intervention of violence.

Violence Prevention offices across the province are currently preparing for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which is an annual internationally recognized campaign bringing awareness to the issue of gender-based violence.

The campaign begins each year on November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and concludes on December 10th (Human Rights day).

16 Days of Activism provides an opportunity for us all to take action against gender-based violence, while listening to and supporting survivors.

As a non-profit organization, we rely on the support of our communities to help us spread the word of our violence prevention campaigns and initiatives.

At this time, we are reaching out to community leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador who may be interested in recognizing 16 Days of Activism with us by wearing purple on November 25th 2023 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and sharing about the campaign on social media.

Your support and participation in the campaign would mean the world to Violence Prevention Avalon East, we extend our heartfelt gratitude in advance for your consideration.

Together, we can work towards creating safer communities for all. If you have any questions about 16 Days of Activism or wish to learn more about our organization's work, please connect with us anytime via email at [email protected] or by phone at (709)-757-0137.

Warm regards,

About us

‘Our Values’

It is a basic human right to live without fear of physical, sexual, emotional or any other form of violence.

Violence is a complex social problem deeply rooted in inequality. Power and privilege[1] are often used as tools of violence. This is particularly true as it relates to those more likely to experience violence, including women, children, indigenous people, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people from other minority groups. People with intersecting minority identities face additional challenges.

The community has a right and a responsibility to get involved to recognize and respond to violence. As part of our community, Violence Prevention Avalon East commits to educating the public on the root causes of violence, having open conversations about privilege and working to help address barriers to support. We are working to challenge and change societal attitudes about violence, including recognizing the trauma history that many perpetrators of violence carry with them. We commit to working with survivors and victims, as well as anybody affected by violence, to ensure that their voices are represented in our work.
