One of our favorite times of the year to go fishing here at Stony Tackle Shack is the Fall. The weather is cooler, the water temps begin to drop and the fish become more active and aggressive searching out food before much colder winter weather arrives. Another bonus to fall fishing, there are less people on the water, and you can get some of those prized fishing spots all to yourself!

**Don't let the fall fishing season get away on you just because it's hunting season! in our experience it can be some of the best fishing you'll see all year!

When to Go Fishing in Alberta

The fishing season in Alberta varies depending on the species and region:

*Spring (April to June): The melting snow fills the rivers, making it an ideal time for river fishing, especially for trout.

*Summer (July to August): The warm weather activates both lake and river ecosystems, making it a popular time for fishing a variety of species.

*Fall (September to November): The cooling temperatures trigger fish to feed aggressively in preparation for winter, offering abundant opportunities for anglers.

*Winter (December to March): The frozen lakes of Alberta become prime locations for ice fishing, especially for yellow perch and lake whitefish.

**Pike**
Many anglers tackle pike in the Fall because they are really aggressive. Look for living vegetation underwater and you are likely to find pike. Big topwater baits are recommended. Cast near a w**d line or sharp break off and see if you get a hit. On days when pike need more coaxing, try floating/diving lures.

**Trout**
Fall is the perfect time to try your hand at fishing for trout. They are less active eaters in the summer due to the warm weather and water temperatures. When fall hits and things cool off, they become hungry and begin to eat as much as they can before the extreme cold moves in.

**Rule of thumb**
If the air temperature is uncomfortable for you (below freezing or scorching hot), it will be uncomfortable for the trout as well, since they are cold blooded and their body temperatures reflect the temperature of the water they swim in.

Trout are most actively feeding in comfortable water temperatures between 1 and 19 degrees Celsius.
Trout feeding picks up just as the water temperature rises one degree above 4, 7 and 9 degrees Celsius, so taking the water temperature every hour is beneficial.

**Walleye**
In early fall, these gamefish are moving to shallow water to enjoy the warmer temperatures. By late fall when the temps drop even more, they are likely deeper.

Trolling crankbaits seems to work best throughout the fall season. They like to hang near areas of big structure and might be on the lookout for good-sized bait to bulk up for winter.

🎣 Discover Alberta's "Poor Man's Lobster"! 🦞

Have you heard of burbot, Alberta's very own "poor man's lobster"? These unique fish may not win a beauty contest, but they sure win over taste buds! 🐟

This summer, you may have spotted boats from Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) on our lakes. They're dropping nets and conducting important research on burbot populations. The work done by biologists helps us understand more about these often-overlooked fish and ensure their populations remain sustainable for future generations of anglers.

Burbot were once considered "trash fish," but they're now gaining popularity as a tasty catch. However, with their growing popularity, it's crucial to understand how fishing impacts their populations.

Todd Zimmerling, President & CEO of ACA, shares insights into the ongoing studies. The team is using various techniques, including nets and cod traps, to gauge burbot numbers and ensure we aren't overfishing them. It's all about keeping our fisheries healthy and vibrant!

Next time you're out fishing, keep an eye out for ACA's research boats and remember, every fish has a story. Let's ensure it's a good one! 🌊🐟

The **Nordic Lodge Grand SLAM** is a thrilling fishing adventure in the pristine wilderness, where anglers aim to catch all four of the region's iconic fish species: Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye, and Arctic Grayling. Set in the remote and scenic waters of northern Saskatchewan, this experience is a bucket-list trip for dedicated anglers seeking both challenge and variety.

Each species offers a unique fishing experience:

- **Northern Pike**: Known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, these formidable predators are often found lurking in shallow, w**dy areas. Catching a pike requires skill and patience, making it a rewarding challenge.

- **Lake Trout**: These deep-water giants are prized for their size and strength. Found in the colder, deeper parts of the lake, Lake Trout demand precision in technique and equipment, as they can test an angler's endurance.

- **Walleye**: Often regarded as one of the tastiest freshwater fish, Walleye are a favorite among anglers. Known for their elusive nature and preference for low light conditions, catching a Walleye requires finesse and knowledge of the water's depths and currents.

- **Arctic Grayling**: This beautiful fish is distinguished by its sail-like dorsal fin and vibrant colors. Arctic Grayling are known for their acrobatic jumps and quick bites, adding a touch of elegance to the Grand SLAM.

The Nordic Lodge Grand SLAM is not just about the thrill of the catch but also about immersing yourself in the breathtaking natural surroundings. The journey takes you to the depths of Reindeer Lake, the shallows of the bays, the rush of the dam and untouched wilderness for Grayling.... offering moments of solitude and connection with nature. Whether you're an experienced angler or new to the sport, this adventure is worthwhile at Nordic Lodge!
