This patient had been self-conscious about his smile for years. He presented with several discoloured teeth due to both staining and dental trauma as a child. He previously had ortho treatment which left him with an unhealthy bite on the anteriors, causing recession. Before proceeding with cosmetic restorations, we used Invisalign to both correct his bite and create room for future restorations. Some gum grafting was done to treat the recession on the lower anteriors. We then brightened his smile using Zoom Whitening. Finally, we restored his discoloured teeth with four life-like porcelain restorations that seamlessly blend into his natural smile. It certainly took some time and patience to get from point A to point B, but all good things take time.

You asked, we listened. Starting September 30th, we are now open Saturdays!

What’s the science behind a smile?

Have you ever noticed that forcing a smile actually makes you happy?

Researchers have proven that intentionally exercising your zygomaticus major muscle and orbicularis oculi muscle can actually make us feel better. This idea, known as the facial feedback hypothesis was first conceptualized by Charles Darwin, who suggested that an individual’s emotional experience can be influenced by their facial expression.

How? When our brains feel happy, endorphins are produced and neuronal signals are transmitted to your facial muscles to trigger a smile. This is the start of the positive feedback loop of happiness. When our smiling muscles contract, they fire a signal back to the brain, stimulating our reward system, and further increasing our level of endorphins. Basically, when our brain feels happy, we smile; when we smile, our brain feels happier.

So, thanks to the positive feedback loop of smiling, we can actually alter our brain's emotional processing pathway to feel happier. Amazing!
