Shark Week is coming up. It originally premiered on July 17, 1988. Featured annually, in July or early August, it was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks. Over time, it grew in popularity and became a hit on the Discovery Channel.

Let’s bring back some of that originality and spread awareness that humans are the danger to sharks and not the other way around. Most sharks are not dangerous to humans — people are not part of their natural diet. Despite their scary reputation, sharks rarely ever attack humans and would much rather feed on fish and marine mammals. Only about a dozen of the more than 400 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans.
