Okay. Finally. The proper website has been finally launched. It needs a bit of fine tuning here and there but it’s head and shoulders over the last two that I used this year. The amount of money time and stress this has caused isn’t even funny. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. Much more to follow but this is some of my new listings for the day so far. For those that could not attend
The Canadian Society of Military Medals & Insignia (CSMMI) is preparing for its highly anticipated 2024 Annual Convention. Scheduled for June 21-22, the event will be held at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Centre in Burlington, Ontario. This gathering is a highlight for militaria enthusiasts, featuring a variety of activities over two days. One of the main attractions of the convention is the extensive vendor area, where 30 to 35 vendors will set up 76 tables showcasing a wide array of military memorabilia. Collectors and history buffs will have the opportunity to browse and purchase medals, badges, uniforms, and other military items. This marketplace atmosphere encourages networking and the sharing of knowledge among attendees, making it a vibrant hub for the militaria community. A significant aspect of the convention is the judged militaria displays. Participants bring their collections to be evaluated by a panel of experts, with awards given for the most impressive and historically significant exhibits. These displays not only highlight individual collections but also serve as an educational resource, offering insights into different periods and aspects of military history. The convention also includes the CSMMI Annual General Meeting, a crucial event for members of the society. This meeting provides an opportunity to discuss the organization’s activities, future plans, and elect new board members. It’s a chance for members to voice their opinions and contribute to the direction of the CSMMI. One unique feature of the convention is the militaria identification and evaluation section, which is open to the public. Attendees can bring in items from their personal collections to have them identified and appraised by experts. This service is invaluable for those who have inherited or discovered military artifacts and wish to learn more about their origins and value. The CSMMI, established in 1965, has a rich history dedicated to promoting and fostering an interest in the collecting and study of military decorations, medals, badges, and insignia. The organization was founded by Don Barnett and Harvey Mitchell, who aimed to create a community for collectors to share information and resources. Over the years, the CSMMI has grown significantly, hosting monthly meetings, publishing newsletters and journals, and organizing conventions that attract collectors from across Canada and beyond. The early days of the CSMMI were marked by modest beginnings, with initial meetings held at Barney’s restaurant in Milton, Ontario. As the society expanded, it moved to larger venues, eventually settling in the Burlington area. The monthly meetings have always been a cornerstone of the CSMMI, providing a regular forum for members to display their collections, participate in auctions, and hear from guest speakers on various military history topics. Throughout its history, the CSMMI has adapted to the changing needs and interests of its members. The society has continuously published newsletters and journals, providing valuable information on all aspects of militaria collecting. These publications have been crucial in documenting and sharing knowledge within the community, and they continue to be an essential resource for collectors. The annual convention is a culmination of the society’s efforts, bringing together collectors from different regions to celebrate their shared passion for military history. It offers a comprehensive program that includes not only the vendor area and judged displays but also seminars, workshops, and social events. These activities provide a well-rounded experience, catering to both seasoned collectors and newcomers to the hobby. Attendees of the 2024 convention can expect a welcoming and informative environment. The event’s location at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Centre in Burlington is convenient for both local and out-of-town visitors. Special room rates are available for those attending the convention, making it easier for collectors to fully immerse themselves in the event. For those interested in joining the CSMMI or learning more about its activities, the convention is an excellent opportunity to connect with current members and see firsthand the benefits of membership. The society is always looking to expand its community and welcomes new members who share a passion for military history and collecting. The 2024 CSMMI Annual Convention is set to be a stellar local event for militaria enthusiasts. With its diverse range of activities, knowledgeable vendors, and engaging displays, the convention offers something for everyone interested in military history and collecting. The CSMMI’s long-standing commitment to fostering a community of collectors ensures that this event will be both educational and enjoyable for all who attend.
