This February, the Toronto Children’s Chorus was thrilled to collaborate with our friends at Sistema Toronto in an exploration of the music of Black composer Rollo Dillworth. This collaboration marked the latest in a tradition spanning seven years, further strengthening the lasting partnership between our organizations. Sistema’s Lambton Park Senior Choir and Parkdale Intermediate Choir joined our Cantarealis Choir for this series of collaborative workshops exploring the musical stylings of this award-winning composer, educator, and arranger. Dillworth’s music reflects influences by classical and African-American folk music, Gospel and Spiritual composers, and African-American literary works. Under the guidance of educators from both the TCC and Sistema, choristers dove into the learning and understanding of two of Dilworth’s pieces arranged for youth choirs. The first piece, entitled Dreamkeeper, features lyrics based on Langston Hughes’ poem “The Dream Keeper”. The second, entitled Shine On Me, is an African-American Spiritual piece. In the second workshop, this combined choir was lucky enough to learn from conductor and music educator Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, the founding director of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale – the first Canadian chamber choir dedicated to the creation and performance of Africentric music. We had the loveliest time performing for CBC's Sounds of the Season this morning! ❄️🎶 Our Choral Scholars woke up bright and early to perform in Metro Morning with two songs: "Deck the Halls" and "Fly Me To the Moon" (Swipe to see a clip of this performance, provided by one of our amazing parents!). We love to spread joy through music, especially at this time of year, and we couldn't be happier to do so with the @cbc! ❤️ 🤲 All donations raised from the #SoundsoftheSeason campaign are going towards local food banks. On May 27th, we had the pleasure of hosting the Missouri State Univeristy Chorale in an evening of truly spectacular musical collaboration with our Toronto Youth Choir. The night kicked off with special guest Andrew Balfour conducting both choirs in his stunning piece "Four Directions." Conductor Cameron F. LaBarr, DMA, led the incredibly talented MSUC in a beautifully inspiring set; followed by the TYC performing their season finale set under the baton of conductor Matthew Otto in his last TYC concert. We finished off the night with another joint performance: I'll Be On My Way, the titular piece of the concert. Watch the MSUC sing a song of farewell before leaving the reception! ❤️ Thank you to everyone involved in this beautiful collaboration and in putting on this spectacular performance! To Andrew, Cameron, and the entire MSUC--thank you for your artistry, talents, and collaborative spirit--we'd love to have you again! Our exceptional Artistic Director, @zimfirapoloz, was invited as a guest conductor to the 36th annual Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival this weekend! CISMF is the most extensive and successful music school student program in Canada, and a remarkable opportunity for students and music educators to collaborate in a non-competitive atmosphere that fosters a high level of musicianship and artistic expression. We're so proud of Zimfira for going out and doing what she does best--shaping young musicians' lives! Coro got to know each other better with a fun bingo game last night! It was a race to fill in the squares (find a chorister who... plays an instrument, loves to read, speaks two languages, etc.) and call out BINGO! They had so much fun bouncing around the room finding fellow choristers to help them fill out their sheets.
