đđąđŠđđŁđđđĄđ đđđđ©đđđ đđđđđĄđŠđȘđąđ„đ§đ (1855-1938)
Born 1855 in Trenton, Kentucky, Josephine Leavell was an accomplished pianist, organist and music teacher before marrying prominent Baptist minister, Rev. Allen Allensworth, in 1877. From 1886 to 1906, Josephine lived with her husband, one of the few African American chaplains in the U.S. Army, and two daughters in remote postings, from Fort Supply, Indian Territory, Oklahoma to Fort Harrison, near Helena, Montana, with many postings in between. During these years, Josephine made an elegant home, performed as organist during her husbandâs chapel services, and raised her daughters, according to Delilah Beasleyâs Negro Trail Blazers of California (1919), in the ways of âthe old school of (Negro) aristocracy.â
Following the Colonelâs retirement in 1906, Josephine and her husband led the founding of Allensworth, an all-black settlement about 40 miles north of Bakersfield, California, now preserved as a State Historic Park. In Allensworth, Josephine helped found the Womenâs Improvement League, sat on the school board, and donated the property for the Mary Dickinson Memorial Library, the public library named for her mother. After her husband was killed in 1914 by a reckless motorcyclist in Monrovia, Josephine remained in Allensworth until 1922, then moved to Los Angeles to live with her daughter Nella, son-in-law Louis Blodgett, (the most successful black contractor in the city), and their children, until her death in 1938.

"URGENT FINAL PLEA for DONNIE
Independent, Toy-Focused at Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control, Millersville, MD
FREE TO A RESCUE: Donnieâs updated heartworm test (previously negative) will be paid for by Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control. He is microchipped and his other pull fees have been waived by AACACC.
A shelter supporter will donate $1,500 to the rescue that pulls Donnie to pay for training.
Donnie, a male pit bull-type mix, blue brindle and white, is about 2 years old. He first arrived at the shelter as a stray on Oct. 12, 2021. He was adopted on Dec. 15 and returned on Jan. 9 after being abandoned by his adopter. He weighed 64 pounds when he returned.
·Donnie was given rabies, distemper and Bordetella vaccinations and Strongid on Oct. 13, 2021. He was neutered at the shelter Oct. 20.
Handsome Donnie â âDonnie Potatoâ some call him -- seems to have an indifferent, âtake them or leave themâ attitude toward most people, relying instead on himself for entertainment and comfort. Given even the little we know about his background of being disappointed by humans, weâre not terribly surprised.
Donnie came to us as an unclaimed stray and spent two months at our shelter before being adopted by a man who soon abruptly moved out, leaving him behind with another person. After two more weeks with Donnie, that person returned him to our shelter, saying Donnie barked so much at visitors that heâd stopped having people over.
Donnie originally underwent his staff observations on Oct. 19 and
did quite well overall, although staff noted that he was very strong and needed to improve his social skills around other dogs: âVery interested, not aggressive, just has no manners,â staff wrote. When he was reobserved by staff on Jan. 26, they again noted his strength and how hard he pulls on a leash, but also noted he âenjoys touch, takes treats nicely.â
After his Jan. 26 re-observations, staff wrote that Donnie was very focused on toys while outside in a playpen, showing far more interest in them than in the people with him. âI would not recommend attempting to remove a toy from his mouth, but he can be easily distracted by another toy,â Donnieâs staff observer wrote. âHe does not appear to have any food guarding issues. Staff had noted in the past he can be overpowering for the walker and be too much energy for other dogs. Today, however, we ran him (exercised him) in the yard before meeting a female, medium-sized, spayed pit bull. He did not display any aggression through the fence but the female was noticeably intimidated by him,â the staffer wrote.
âWith all Donnieâs quirks, he would require an experienced, physically strong owner who can guarantee appropriate exercise,â she continued. âDue to this, Donnieâs best chance for success would most likely be through a rescue partner.â
So far, however, no rescue has been able to offer Donnie a placement. Now some shelter staff are documenting what they report as a decline in his behavior while in his cage. On Feb. 17, Feb. 18 and Feb. 21, different staff members each wrote that during afternoon feedings on those days he lunged at them while in his cage, growled and showed his teeth. âI no longer feel comfortable interacting with nor do I trust this dog,â one wrote.
On Feb. 27, however, another staff person wrote that while doing afternoon feedings, âI opened Donnieâs run up, reached for his bowl and pet his head with no problems. I filled his bowl and returned it with no problems.â
The experienced dog volunteers normally are the ones who take Donnie out for walks and/or playtime at least twice a day. They have not reported similar negative experiences with him. How he acts when they go to his cage to take him out, one said, âdepends on if he has to p*e. He sits calmly sometimes and other times he jumps up and cries/squealsâ to be taken out, as she said he is very housebroken.
Multiple long-term dog volunteers say they do not believe Donnie is showing signs he is deteriorating in the shelter. They generally have positive comments about him â not that they donât think he has issues, especially his focus on toys in lieu of interacting with humans.
âI donât see any difference in Donnie than when he was here before being adopted,â one of the shelterâs most experienced dog volunteers said. âIf I take him out with no toys in the pen, he pays a little more attention to me but spends most of the time looking for toys. If he finds one, he just lays on the ground and chews it. I am not comfortable taking a toy away from him. He is easy to collar and return.â
âDonnie Potato, while not thriving maybe, is far from deteriorating, in my opinion,â another long-term dog volunteer said. âI do respect staff witnessing changes in behavior during feeding and cleaning interactions. He just has not changed at all for me.â
This same volunteer noted that Donnieâs âone joy in life right now is pulling us to the play yard (after first stopping to p*e forever) to find a prized rubber toy to chew on as long as you will allow him. Heâs one of the easiest (especially considering his strength) to get out and in his run and thatâs with putting on an easy walk harness.â She also noted that before Donnie was adopted, she showed him to an older man (who decided on a different male pit mix, only because of Donnieâs energy and this manâs own age), âI witnessed Donnie be a dog. He paid attention to this man, was excited to see him over a toy, leaned in for pets, was responsive to verbal commands.â
Does Donnie respond better to men? He went on a two-hour-plus hike one day with a male Marine and appeared to enjoy every minute. A savvy male dog volunteer called him âa high energy dog in a low rider body. Great looking with a great personality. Practically guaranteed to attract attention and start a conversation on a walk. He has been disappointed by humans in the past and seems for now to focus more on his toys. But I honestly believe that a loyal owner would find a loving and devoted friend in DonnieâŠsmart, trainable, friendly. (Donnie) would benefit immeasurably from a training class.â
To help him get such training, a shelter supporter is offering a $1,500 donation to the rescue partner who takes Donnie.
Donnie was one of several dogs that two very knowledgeable staffers from an excellent shelter rescue partner met recently in a large outdoor playpen. After watching and trying to interact with Donnie for quite a while, the staffers noted that, while not unfriendly, Donnie just didnât show much interest in people. That, they said, would make it difficult to find a home for him when most potential adopters are looking for a strong connection between a dog and themselves.
âDonnie P definitely needs out,â one of the experienced dog volunteers said. âA foster home could allow him to be more of a dogâŠ(he perhaps would be) a very housebroken dog, who would like a lifetime supply of chew toys, and regular potty breaks and meals and nothing else. He deserves it.â
We do not use the term âurgent final pleaâ lightly, as those of you who have received hundreds of rescue pleas from us over the years know. But we do not consider it humane to indefinitely continue to confine free-spirited Donnie to a shelter cage 23Âœ hours a day. We know our rescue partners are overwhelmed with requests to take dogs who donât have issues like Donnieâs, and that foster homes, especially homes with experienced, physically strong fosters who have the time to take a dog out for long stretches of exercise, are nearly as scarce as unicorns these days. We understand.
But we have to ask: Do you have a place for Donnie, please?

Trout fishing season is almost here, so keep an eye out for chain pickerel. This invasive species is negatively impacting native fish species in Nova Scotia such as the endangered Atlantic salmon (plamu).
Chain pickerel have a characteristic green/brown chain-like pattern along the sides, a white belly, and a dark line under the eyes. The bag limit for chain pickerel is 100 and there are some locations, listed in the Nova Scotia Anglerâs Handbook, where you can fish this species year-round!
If you catch a chain pickerel, we encourage you not to throw it back
